Monologue: Get Up, AmericaBill kicks off the 20th season of Real Time with jokes about President Biden's press conference and our perpetual pandemic panic.
Living with Covid
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Bari Weiss join Bill to discuss whether it's time to move past Covid restrictions and get back to normal.
New Rule: First Lady Barack Obama
Bill argues that it's time for the Democrats to break some unwritten rules and find a way to put Barack Obama back in the White House.
Overtime: Bari Weiss, Timothy Snyder, Rep. Ritchie Torres
Bill Maher and his guests answer viewer questions after the show.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Professor Timothy Snyder (5:43), entire panel discussion with Rep. Ritchie Torres and Bari Weiss (15:45), Bill's "funny bit" (33:56) and includes the opening part of New Rules (46:18). It won't last long, as usual:

(118,006 posts)On Bill Maher Overtime "On Tyranny" writer Timothy Snyder said something
interesting. The US is 'between'. If Trump had tried a coup against an authoritarian state and failed the authoritarian leader would have taken him out. If the US was a strong democracy and Trump had tired a coup and failed he would have been prosecuted.
Applegrove: so prosecute him!!!! Don't be between!!!!
Thanks Rhiannon

(202,966 posts)But I agree, Biden needs to call them out from time to time, but we know that he'll be lambasted by certain media when he does. And one of the reasons we value him is because he's a decent guy, not a nasty insulting POS like his predecessor.

(118,006 posts)property for it. I am a cat person first. Brussels Griffon are cute. I had to look it up I admit. Both our dog breeds are Belgian.

(202,966 posts)I got to know the last one and he was pretty amazing. She has a lot of property in the back woods of Vermont and he knew the property. He ran all over the place, but he knew where to stop where her property ended. Sweet dog, but way too big to be a lap dog.
And I've had 2 Brussels Griffons, both rescue. I gew up with a cocker spaniel because my Dad did, loved that dog more than anything. So when I called about a senior cocker up for adoption, I was told that this dog had been placed, but the woman in rescue told me she knew of another dog that was in real trouble - his owner had died. So I adopted a 9-year-old Brussels Griffon instead and then was offered a five-month-old puppy, a pet shop rescue. So that's my Jack and the question I get most often about him is "What kind of dog is that?" I've only seen one other BG than mine ever.

(202,966 posts)And I've never been disappointed. Older dogs are inexplicably harder to place, people want puppies, but puppies are hard! Jack and I went to puppy class twice! The eldest was my Barney, a cocker who was either 10 or 11 when I adopted him and he was just the best dog with the best temperament. He was tough to place since he came from a puppy mill and wasn't housebroken and had never lived with people. But not only was he the sweetest dog, he was the best dog I've had for not "going" in the house. And I had him for 8 wonderful years...

(118,006 posts)is 17. One of mine is 8. The 17 year old, Twilight, doesn't groom herself anymore so I cut off dreds and brush her. Other than that she is fine. I hope it doesn't happen soon but when she is gone I'll have to get a senior cat to give my Captain Hughey company. I got an unadoptable cat 20 years ago. I named him Monster. He was so loving. He had some biting behavior but that became less and less over time. Good cat. I miss him. He used to sleep in my armpit.

(202,966 posts)I've had 4 cats in my life, two I adopted after my uncle died and one of them was the best cat I'll ever know. And the other two were those I rescued and adopted from outdoors, both were not easy to catch, but they then became indoor cats. The toughest was the cat I have now who I found as a kitten in a supermarket parking lot one night on my way home. I only managed to catch him with the help of a guy who worked in the store and his equally helpful wife who came to pick him up. The vet said that this kitten was only about 7 weeks old - that was in 2014 and is my Felix. He's grown up to be a beautiful cat, but he still bites! So I'm glad to hear that they can get over it...

(118,006 posts)tried really hard to puncture, he only once managed to and that was when a window closed on him and he was scared. I opened the window with my thumb sticking out and he drew blood. The rest of the time he would bite down on my arm, after focusing on my shoulder abnormally for a minute or less, and because he only had one fang he could not puncture. He tried really hard to. It got to the point where I would catch him staring and knew it was coming so I could move or distract him. He had been an unfixed male until I got him when he was 2. He had battle scars. I liked to think he was the father of 70. Other than his penchant for attacking in that limited way he had a great personality and was sweet to Twilight when I got her as a kitten. In his last years, Monster barely attacked at all. You sound like you have quite the pet possy there. They are so much fun.
Rhiannon12866
(202,966 posts)Monster sounds like he had the best home with you! I wish that I could tell when Felix's bites were coming and you'd think he'd have gotten over it in 7 years, but the last time I had him at the vet, he bit him and drew blood.
And that's the only thing about adopting senior animals, I only have Jack and Felix now and Jack is now 15. *sigh*

(202,966 posts)I haven't gotten any reminders from my vet since that "incident." And I've gone to him since the '90s and he was particularly fond of my dogs, but then they never bit anybody.

(118,006 posts)he puts them in the basement at night. He put Monster in the basement one night. The next night he tried to do it again but Monster spit and fussed and threatened to scratch if he were to be picked up. So my dad got the oven mitts from the kitchen and picked up Monster and put him downstairs. Comical because my dad must have weighed 250 pounds at the time. I wish I'd been there.

(29,166 posts)I am so f'ing tired of the "Biden is old" jokes... and the libertarian "we are done with Covid"...
Covid doesn't give a shit about how tired you are of Covid...
Bill's major issue is that he likes having a live audience... and the pandemic has cut into that.
Fuck him... he is a selfish prick.

(7,520 posts)Maher's main schtick these day is tweaking "liberals" by using Fox News talking points. His favorite sport is attacking the "woke" bogeyman. My guess is that, as a comedian, he resents that he can't comfortably tell gay, black, and fat jokes any more.
The worst part of his show tonight was his context-free "analysis" of per-capita covid deaths by state which was a reformulation of right-wing anti-vax talking points without an acknowledgment of the parentage.
He pointed out that the "lockdown" states of New Jersey and New York were 4 and 6 on the list. He didn't mention that they were the epicenter at the start of the pandemic when the medical community didn't have the means (remember PPE?) or the knowledge and experience to treat patients. People in the metropolitan area died early and often and the other states have been catching up ever since. Hopefully they never do. Curiously, Maher left the "lockdown" state of California off his list- probably because it is 38 on the list.
He held up Florida, at 17 on the list, as proof that mitigation strategies are superfluous. He is, of course, comparing Florida to New York/NJ and not California. The states list usually includes D.C. and Puerto Rico, so 26 would be an average performance. Maher also neglects (more likely is unaware) that Florida made the worst of a favorable situation. They were not hit hard early. Floridians are better able to avoid indoor spaces because of warm winter weather. Florida leaped up several spots in the rankings during the summer's Delta surge when Governor DeSantis blocked schools and local jurisdictions from declaring and enforcing mask mandates based on local case and hospitalization counts. DeSantis fought vaccine mandates, made no attempt to encourage vaccination, and ran around the state establishing monoclonal antibody treatment centers. As Florida hits the peak in the Omicron surge, the antibody centers are almost useless - the limited, available treatments are less effective against Omicron. Florida will probably move up another spot or two before the pandemic is done with us.
A better statistic than deaths per capita would be avoidable deaths per capita. If it was possible to compile that kind of statistic, Florida would be surely be near or at the top. Fuck Ron DeSantis and fuck Bill Maher for using his platform to spread deadly bullshit.

(53,823 posts)I always hate the "whine line" that appears every time his show airs and how many have to remind us they don't watch the show anymore.
That said, he and even Weiss, were way off in regard to COVID and that was disappointing. However, were they weren't wrong, is more and more liberals are feeling this way; some people really aren't understanding what is happening with this virus. To pretend that some on the left are getting exhausted with COVID and associated restrictions is a failing. I love Torres and can't wait to see what becomes of him. The first guest scared the shit out of me even more than I already am. "New Rules" was good. I haven't seen "Overtime" yet.
Rhiannon12866
(202,966 posts)And like some others, I was very impressed with Rep. Torres, I hope they have him back in the future. I also wish that his district was farther north here in New York. *sigh*
But I know what you mean about them saying they're "over" Covid. Bill's been like that for awhile, think he gets aggravated when parts of his comedy tour are canceled. And there was the time he tested positive and he had to quarantine and they canceled his Real Time show for 2 weeks. Since he said he felt fine, I guess he no longer takes Covid seriously.
Speaking of comedy tours, back in November I was able to see Al Franken when he came to Albany during his Nationwide Tour Tour! And of course he was terrific and we had great seats. He talked for over 2 hours to a sold out crowd with only a microphone, a stool and 3 glasses of water. He was funny and very political and the audience totally "got" him - and he got a standing ovation at the end.
And to see his show, we had to show ID and proof of vaccination and masks were required, as they are indoors here in New York. Of course I'd prefer that he was still working for us in the Senate, but it was a real treat to see him in person!
