'Davos Man': How Billionaires Devour World & Fuel Global Inequality, Prolong Pandemic; Bregman

- DN! Jan. 21, '22. Many of the world's wealthiest people wrap up virtual talks today at the World Economic Forum based in Davos, Switzerland, & Oxfam reports the incomes of 99% of the world's population dropped during the pandemic while the world's 10 richest men saw their wealth double. Meanwhile, vaccine profits have minted at least 9 new billionaires at Moderna, BioNTech and China's CanSino, amassing a combined new wealth of over $19 billion.

To discuss the rise of billionaires and the policies that got us here, we speak with New York Times global correspondent Peter Goodman, author of the new book "Davos Man: How the Billionaires Devoured the World." Goodman says billionaires' championing of "stakeholder capitalism" is ruining U.S. democracy, and attributes the Omicron variant to "our unwillingness to challenge patents."

- 2019. Rutger Bregman tells Davos to talk about tax avoidance: 'This is not rocket science.' On his first visit to Davos, Rutger Bregman dismisses 'stupid philanthropy schemes', saying the real issue that needs tackling is tax avoidance. 'We can invite Bono once more but come on we've got to be talking about taxes.. all the rest is bullshit in my opinion.' The Dutch historian feels like he’s ‘at a firefighters conference & no one’s allowed to speak about water.’

about the global economy we were all sold back in the 90s. Remember their lie, it is going to make all the working people of the world wealthier. What it did was drive all the people off their tribal lands so the resources could be privatized and deeded to private individuals and corporations. Then the people were driven to the cities and were easily exploited for unlivable wages.

The video is not about what I just typed, those are just my thoughts on what he says so clearly.

pay your taxes.' Driving people off the land in order to exploit natural resources for commercial purposes has long taken place and intensified in the last several decades with major consequences for humans and the environment. Look at farming in Brazil, extraction in Asia and other places. When does the greed and destruction stop..

Beginning more a century ago, companies and corporations bought up private properties in Appalachia, Colorado, Montana, the Midwest and many places for mining, logging and farming operations. In coal country I know, roads, equipment and infrastructure used for mining also damaged and polluted communities and forced many families and small farmers off their land and into dependence on the companies for work. Understatement.
