while not escalating the violence reminds me of the last scene in the movie, Witness.

Harrison Ford is a good cop on an Amish farm when a crooked cop comes to kill him. A child rings the alarm bell and the entire community responds by showing up as witnesses, preventing the crooked cop from acting against Ford.

Another similar ending is in the movie, Thunderheart. Val Kilmer is an FBI agent on a Lakota Reservation where he discovers that his supervising FBI agent is secretly using reservation land to mine uranium, which is poisoning the water. The crooked FBI agent (Sam Sepherd) gets Kilmer and a Lakota cop (Graham Greene) cornered in a dead end below a steep, rocky ridge. At the top of the ridge several dozen Lakota people, who have learned what is happening, appear, silently holding guns trained on the crooked FBI agent.

When people unite in common cause, they can defeat evil.

The entire world (except TFG and certain Republicans) has turned on Putin and for excellent reasons. Though I have to say that it's heartwrenching to see what the people of Ukraine are going through - I know the world supports them, but it's got to be cold comfort when they're forced to leave everything behind and somehow make a uncertain journey, hoping to make it to a strange country. I only wish we could do more...

for Ukraine without escalating to a full out war between the US and Russia, which might end in the use of nuclear weapons.

I wish we could provide safe zones for people within Ukraine so they would not need to leave their country.

I wish that all of the EU and NATO could launch a successful, coordinated attack on Russia to overthrow Putin and his gang before Russia could retaliate.

I would love it if we could get some undercover people into Russia to locate Putin and take him out.

But, realistically, those things are not going to happen. So I am glad to see that the world is united in helping in every way that it can.

I don't think Putin was prepared for the global response, he figured taking down a smaller more vulnerable country would be a day's work - but he's now facing the wrath and repercussions from countries throughout the world. But, as you say, I wish we could do more - and of course there's the threat of nuclear weapons.

are showing us a valuable lesson in taking a stand, even when the odds look overwhelming and the foe is formidable.

Their example to us nullifies the negative posts that we see on DU all too often saying that "we are f'd" or "American democracy is done." Ukraine shows us that there is no room for such defeatist views among people who believe that democracy is worth saving. Work harder and more creatively, stay strong and courageous, and you will draw like-minded people and ideas to your cause to help.

Take a stand, speak up loudly against the Putin/Trump party in the US at every chance. Drown them out with accurate and biting attacks on their lies and hypocrisy.

The leadership in the world that Biden took in sounding the alarm about Russia mobilized the world reaction. We need strong leadership words here sounding the alarm loudly and clearly about the traitorous behavior of the Republican party. Make them into the pariah in the US that Putin is in the world.

And it's long past time that this country left TFG's lies in the dust. And he no longer leads the news cycles with his outrageous comments and behavior. And I think it's happening, just not fast enough. He needs to become a pariah even in the Republican party. They need to realize he finally stepped over the line with his support for a murderous warmongering dictator - as if his lies about the election, calls for traitorous insurrectionists and blatant violation of laws and norms weren't enough.
