The Russians got clobbered in the race to the moon, but our biggest mistake (thanks Richard Nixon!) was abandoning our amazing manned space program during the Apollo project in favor of ONLY the Space Shuttle, which is long gone.

Our astronauts used to go 240,000 miles into space when going to the moon. Now, at most, with only earth orbitals since 1972, it's more like a couple of hundred miles. That's FIFTY YEARS, folks.

It's a shame we have to rely on Elon Musk etc to get us out of this. I will be grateful that Elon is around to hopefully solve this barbarian threat if it comes down to it. However, this is testament as to why the US must have its OWN manned rocket program and rely on no one else, whether it's the Russians, the Chinese, or billionaires of any nationality.
