(363 posts)I want to be her when I grow up. Actually, I'm kind of grown already, at least physically. In fact, well past grown. I'm 63 years old now. Do you think it is possible? Seriously. That's a real question. I'd go back to school for the right degree. I could go back to school, finish at 67 or 68, have a 10, 15 or 20 year career and then retire (if the fate allow me a long life). I have no desire to retire. I already have an MS in Conservation Biology, own a goat farm and run a targeted grazing business and have worked as an environmental specialist for the state and ED at a land trust. I'm prone to inertia when I'm not active, but I love being active and am dynamo once I get moving. Maybe it is impossible for a usual person to get hired as a park ranger at my age. Betty had so many skills and so much history specific to her position with the NPS. There is nothing - nothing - I love more than being outdoors in nature and sharing that with others. It is kind of my calling. I suspect I sound delusional. Maybe I should set my sights on a volunteer job at a nature center.

(2,193 posts)Whatever the other particulars of her health regimen are - and they definitely must be working for her - she was not just active in that she was working for the Park Service; she was also physically ACTIVE, and that's how she stayed so fit. Also, and probably due in great measure to her active lifestyle, she maintained a healthy weight, slender and trim.
