looks to me like the tank is approaching the end of it's utility given a world of ATWs and drones.

If one side controls the air and can deploy their tanks, there should be no tanks for them to shoot at.

During WWII and beyond, tanks were useful to support infantry and bust bunkers. We have so many other ways to do that that tanks are a waste of gas.

To protect the tanks. I don't know what he was thinking.

With drones and anti tank weapons, tanks are looking like a waste of gas, yes.

There have been some variants, and the T-90 which came on in the 90's is based on the T-72.
These tanks are old, and simply not capable of surviving against new anti-tank weapons.
In Ukraine, we are seeing them destroyed by the hundred.
They amount to nothing more than a self-propelled coffin for their crew of 3.
