Pretending Covid Is Over Isn't Working - The Mehdi Hasan Show

Covid cases and deaths in the U.S. are, once again, rising at an alarming rate. But despite the stats, many people seem prepared to pretend things are back to normal. MSNBC medical contributor Dr. Uche Blackstock joins Mehdi to discuss recent data and (inaccurate) assertions that we don’t need mask mandates. 05/31/2022.

New York State showed up bright red on the map. It's definitely not over. But the chances of going back to mask mandates and mandatory distancing are slim to none after rescinding and reinstating and rescinding the mandates so many times - people really believe it's over - and just in time for yet another "tourist season" in these parts.

And they've also said that the number of cases - everywhere - are way undercounted now since so many people are using home tests and not reporting. In the past month I've known three people who tested positive for the first time and the two I know well were fully vaccinated. *sigh*

that get updated on different days and at different times (and some even have an API for those who program and monitor, and that is what is used to automatically connect to and import/export and/or push/pull the data), where CDC may pull that at some specific time each day. Thus there will be lags based on how often a reporting site's data is updated, and how the automated data push/pull programs are configured.

I know over the past 2 years here in PA (including as of last month), they dropped down from reporting daily (M - Sat) to daily (M - F) to now only weekly on Wednesdays just after midnight, to update the dashboard data (which CDC is probably using for their data).

HOWEVER PA's update timing would always lag a day due to the later reporting of its biggest contributor - Philly - which updates their data around 1:30 pm. And now with the latest schedule, Philly is only updating once a week on Mondays, so it might help a bit with the "once a week" state reporting to have the city's data in before the state does its update later in a week, but it's all still a week behind. The same may be happening with CDC because every state is different and again, CDC may check at the same time each day and miss data being released at other times of the day and won't catch that until the next day.

Alternately, the news sites like NYT and other data sites like Johns Hopkins (or world-o-meter, etc) may be literally "polling" much more frequently (basically doing "live updates" ) throughout the day, every day, vs CDC, which again is probably only doing theirs once a day.

We just had a three day weekend, very little reporting was happening. THat said, It may be peaking in the east, Conn, has declined, NY seems to be flat. But Houston just reported a rise in its wastewater surveilance, Texas has been rising for a month, maybe this wave is moving west.

We, and the world, will see a lot more deaths until this virus runs its course—f it ever does.
