Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 6/3/22

Monologue: Pro-Life Policing

Bill reacts to the Texas school shooting in his Real Time monologue.

When the Cops Don't Come

Michael Shellenberger and Douglas Murray join Bill Maher to dicuss the actions of law enforcement during the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Books That Didn't Age Well

The author of “How to Murder Your Husband,” has been found guilty of murdering her husband. But that's not the only book that didn't age well...

New Rule: The United States of Dumb-merica

New Rule: We have to figure out how a country can solve any problem if so many of its people are so intractably, astoundingly stupid.

Overtime: Eric Holder, Michael Shellenberger, Douglas Murray

Bill Maher and his guests – former US Attorney General Eric Holder, California gubernatorial candidate Michael Shellenberger, and author/columnist Douglas Murray – answer viewer questions after the show.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the interview with Eric Holder (6:23), entire panel discussion with Michael Shellenberger and Douglas Murray (16:08), and includes the opening part of New Rules (43:26). It won't last long, as usual:

I've kind of been watching in bits and pieces, have the second repeat on now. I liked the guests, though I wasn't familiar with either of the guys on the panel. And I liked New Rules as well - I remember "Jay Walking" - Jimmy Kimmel does something similar now with the same inexplicable results. And I agreed with Bill about the ridiculous gun-blasting political ads. He makes a good point, most people aren't paying attention. Unless something happens that affects someone personally, they're not willing to make changes. That's certainly what's happening in Texas - and have we ever seen Abbott with his sleeves rolled up??

I wasn't familiar with the panel guests, but it was a good discussion, there was plenty of breaking news today. And I agree that there were plenty of "funny bits" and I also liked New Rules, except probably that last line!

I started posting Bill Maher back in 2017 since when it was posted, it used to eventually "disappear," so I found the "official" videos which are permanent. As for the "bootleg" video, I learned about that from a former member who used to add it to my posts - that's what used to be regularly posted. After 5 years, I think I got it right!

I think identity politics is more of a regional thing. In coastal California identity is pretty much downplayed. In the north especially we hear "Democrat"" and "Republican," not "Liberal" and Conservative."

But I get it. For decades propagandists have defined liberalism as evil with little counter branding from the Left. At this point it would take a monumental effort and massive amounts of money to even make a dent, especially now with the bombardment of lies coming from cable television and social media.

Is identity really that important? It's become so polarizing maybe we just focus on the positives. Focus on the issues.

My two cents.

With their catchphrase "Own the Libs," aiming to turn it into something vacuous or silly, rather than a progressive point of view, policies aimed at helping the people, which is something to be proud of. So these days, progressive candidates avoid it.

And while these Republicans are attempting to own the "conservative" label, how many of them really are? That philosophy died years ago - including "the party of Reagan," let alone "the party of Lincoln." Three centuries ago, Lincoln fought to free the slaves and to give them the rights as equal American citizens. How's that whole "equality" thing working out?

As for Reagan, I visited the USSR in the late '80s with my grandmother's peace group, and Reagan was not popular there because he took such a tough stance with Gorbachev, causing the Russian hard liners to force the rolling back of Gorbachev's progressive policies, perestroika and glasnost - openness and transparency. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" TFG's Republican party admires and embraces Putin's autocratic policies!

And when it comes to the Assault Weapons Ban, Clinton called on three former presidents to help get it passed, Carter, Ford and Reagan!

And I agree that we are hopelessly polarized now, but I also believe that those who now who like to boast about the "conservative" label, have no real idea of what it has always meant.

I was afraid I got a little carried away, LOL. This was a good show, just wish they gave the guests - and they all showed up this week, including Eric Holder - more time to answer questions during the Overtime segment. They must get hundreds of questions and rarely get past a couple. I was particularly disappointed a couple of weeks ago when Bill cut off Ali Velshi and Doug Jones, two very smart guys, who were getting into a very informative discussion.

and what life was like before he got in and who wasn't here to see what happened to "progressive" cities.

Those cities weren't progressive when yuppies came in. They were absolutely fine with yuppies buying up the row houses where 20 low wage workers had rooms with hot plates and dorm fridges and throwing the tenants on the street and converting the places back into mansions for 2 overpaid yuppies and maybe one rug rat and an au pair. That's what I saw happening, and Reagan was peachy with throwing low wage workers onto the street, "let them look for better jobs," like those grew on trees. Congress consistently refused to allow the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation and soon janitors, dishwashers, and a lot of other minimum wage workers found themselves sleeping three or four to a room just to keep a roof over their heads. They were one bad flu away from losing their jobs and becoming homeless.

So don't talk to me about progressives ruining cities, you effete little twit. They didn't get progressive until all green spaces and underpasses were full of marginal workers in tents after years of conservative greed, mismanagement, and cruelty.

As for Maher looking down his long blue nose at opiate users, seems he's using a federally prohibited substance, himself, so one wonders where the idea he's qualified to shame any other adult comes from.

(Oh, and if he wants to see first world homelessness with people shooting up on the street, he needs to get out in his own country. There are parts of major cities in the UK where you see this shit)

And that lueless twit just would not SHUT UP.

Good New Rule, though.
