(521 posts)The Republican focus on the school doors is a fraud. Ten days before Uvalde there was a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo -- what sort of locked doors was it supposed to have? Before that, a mass shooting at a church -- should it have had doors like a bank vault? School shootings make up only 17% of mass shooting incidents; turning schools into fortresses touches only a sixth of the mass shootings. Even so, some school shootings have taken place on the playground or when school lets out, like the Stockton school shooting. Parkland and Uvalde even had an armed policeman on the premises, but that man turned out to be ineffective. If only Republicans were as eager to have math books and history books in the schools as they are to have armed patrols there.
The real problem is assault rifles. A list of mass shootings, arranged in order of the number of casualties, goes on for pages before you find a weapon other than a semiautomatic rifle (and some were converted to fully automatic). A well-regulated militia does not need assault rifles. There are already eleven million assault rifles in American homes, stopping the manufacture still enables the marketing of pre-owned assault rifles but there can be regulations as to age, waiting periods, background checks, etc., for such transactions.
This suggestion won't cure all the problems with guns, but it's a big step in the right direction.

(6,623 posts)It's the fucking GUNS.
The work of regulating ("A well regulated Militia...." is necessary. Now.
We could adapt what every other country on earth does.
We are not willing to live in a country that permits gun massacre of our children. Enough!
