New Rule: Hollywood's Culture of Violence
Hollywood is the wokest place on earth in every other area of social responsibility, but when it comes to the unbridled romanticization of gun violence crickets.
Overtime: Cornel West, Kellyanne Conway, Josh Barro
Bill Maher and his guests Dr. Cornel West, Josh Barro and Kellyanne Conway answer viewer questions after the show.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Dr. Cornel West (6:39), entire panel discussion with Josh Barro and Kellyanne Conway (17:55), Bill's "funny bit" (30:57) and includes the opening part of New Rules (44:26). It won't last long, as usual:

(205,202 posts)I kinda dreaded posting this since I know that Kellyanne Conway would not be a popular guest - and I was a little disappointed myself because the topic of the night is obviously last night's hearings and this was not the best guest lineup to discuss it!

(27,813 posts)Conway did nothing but repeat completely off-topic talking points - and did it while Maher and the other guest were speaking.
Even while the two men were engaged in discussion, you can hear her voice over them.
She literally never shut up.

(205,202 posts)It's been awhile (before the pandemic when he had a full panel) that he's had a real right-winger, but it was balanced before, the other guests would put him in his place. And he had to know that Conway wouldn't shut up and was just an annoyance. She was on with Trevor Noah and he handled her much better. It had to be a disappointment since everyone was talking about last night's hearing, but she'd be the very last guest to have a constructive conversation with - about anything.

(25,465 posts)There is no case of listening to Conway without wanting to jab a fork into your eyes. The audience laughed at her because her technique is so obvious. Going back now to finish the show because I'm a masochist.

(111,245 posts)She refuses to stick to a subject, she refuses to answer a question, and she WILL NOT SHUT UP.
Please, Bill, no more of these right wing yappy dogs of either sex.
New Rules are good and right on the money. Hollywood needs to discover alternatives, like old fashioned fist fights or--dare I say it?--a protagonist using his brain to deliver comeuppance to some thug. Whodunits were great, able to maintain tension within a whole film. These repetitive shootemups got boring a long time ago form so many of us who aren't adolescent males.

(51,584 posts)My eyes and ears have been saved. Same goes for the heart attack I would have had if I watched that greedy traitor. I need to save my anger and frustration for my anti-gun rally tomorrow.
I will watch New Rules, thanks again!

(27,813 posts)... like so many commentaries I've heard in the last week - still misses the point, which is: Get assault weapons out of the hands of anyone who isn't a soldier on the battlefield.
As Dick Durbin said this week in response to people who insist they need them for hunting, "If you need an AK-15 to hunt for deer, maybe you should stick to fishing."

(111,245 posts)but it's those idiotic movies, one after another after another, that glorify rage driven murder and make dumbasses think guns are some kind of solution to life's problems.
I find the plots boring and repetitive and would avoid them in any case, but they'd be greatly improved if they showed a little more of what really happens. There's no roar and gush of fire and smoke. There are loud bangs, minimal muzzle fire and minimal smoke because we don't use black powder any more. People don't get blown back toward the scenery, they slowly crumple forward. There is also a lot of blood and shredded flesh and loud moaning because people die rather more slowly than Hollywood would have us believe.
I really hate those movies. They don't glamorize guns as much as they legitimize rage. They sanitize what those guns do to human beings and they make death all neat and tidy, without agony. Some of the blood on hands is in Hollywood. Most of it is on the hands of the NRA, their pet Congressmen, and the gun manufacturers.
I've posted repeatedly that semi auto weapons do not belong in a civilian population. Yes, most owners go through an adult lifetime without firing them anywhere but at the gun range. The ones who use them to hunt other people are ruining it for all of them. Those guns just make mass murder too easy. They have got to go.
So do those shitty movies. Enough, already.

Him and Conway are two sides of the same coin

(205,202 posts)I cringed when I saw that Kellyanne Conway was on since I would have preferred someone more qualified to discuss the current news of the day (the hearings!). But it turned out to be a good show and I'm glad I tuned in - a few years back I would have skipped it if there was a right-winger on the panel - but she's the first one they've had for quite awhile and I always learn something no matter who the guests are and tonight was no exception... And I also enjoy the humor.

(53,950 posts)I moaned to my husband who was going to be on and was not happy. However, I was a bit surprised. West was not as bad I feared, but he still had some pompous bullshit he spewed, but overall, not as bad as some past showings. I was happy that Barro and even Bill tried to keep that deluded propagandist, CONway, on topic, but as typical of a RW dipshit, she did nothing but spew talking points. Had it been a drinking game to drink every time she mentioned "gas prices" or her book, I'd be real fucked up right now. So typica, topic is oranges, and they discuss car parts! WTF?!
When monkeypox came up and Bill was doing his typical "I don't know shit about medical stuff, but I am still gonna flap my gums about it", my husband thought Barro was going to jump the table and punch him.
On a side note, Barro is a hottie, but the porn 'stache has got to go!
Rhiannon12866
(205,202 posts)That has been the topic of the day and Kellyanne Conway is not the one to discuss it. But it went better than I anticipated, too - just not what I felt like heating about and I'd have thought Bill would have wanted a panel that was into discussing it, too. And I know that Cornel West isn't popular here, either, but the reactions to his interiew surprised me.
As for Josh Barro, I didn't think I knew who he was, but as soon as I saw him, I remembered. But what's with the mustache? I agree that's got to go! He was definitely the sanest of tonight's guests - and I'd be willing to bet that he wished he'd been on any other panel!

(6,181 posts)Why would Bill subject his audience to her BS talking points?
And the bootleg version was full of ads including the idiot Ron Johnson from Wisconsin. Not once in the hour but twice.
Mosquito and RoJo how totally annoying.
