The country was able to survive the first coup attempt from Donald Trump and his allies, and as Americans learn more about what happened after the 2020 election, it is crystal clear that EVERYONE involved needs to be held accountable. If they are not, then they are basically being given the greenlight to do it again, and this time they'll have learned from their previous mistakes. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains the dangers of letting these people walk.

(204,779 posts)He is absolutely right, there were never repercussions from the Civil War and we're still dealing with the results from that today! Who among the secessionists - who declared war against of the rest of the country, received punishment for their insurrectionist actions?? Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate troops, or Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States?? Neither one of them did - and we're still dealing with those who are not only "proud" of their "Confederate heritage," but continue to celebrate it!
After the death of Lincoln, President Andrew Johnson issued a Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon to persons who had participated in the rebellion against the United States in 1865. Robert E. Lee only never received punishment for his treasonous acts, instead he became president of Washington College - where a Ku Klux Klan chapter flourished - and the school was renamed Washington and Lee in his honor. He did lose the right to vote and some of his land, captured by Union troops, was turned into Arlington Cemetery, but his family was compensated for it after his death. After the war, he campaigned to have his citizenship restored, but his application was not processed by Secretary of State William Seward, however in 1975 a resolution to have his citizenship restored was introduced by Senator Byrd, was passed by the Senate and signed by President Ford. And his birthday is still celebrated in several states.
As for Jefferson Davis, a similar resolution to restore his citizenship was passed by the Senate in 1978 and signed by President Carter!
In Mary Trump's second book, she says that the Confederate flag should be prohibited as a symbol of hate, as the swastika is in Germany. But, as we know, the Confederate flag is still flown as a symbol of "Southern pride," and was carried into the Capitol on January 6th by insurrectionists!
So I take Farron Cousins' point. If the insurrection supporters now serving in our government are allowed to continue, will we still be dealing with their supporters 157 years from now??

(204,779 posts)While visiting a friend who lived in a nearby apartment complex, I saw a truck flying a full sized Confederate flag! Not only was I shocked, but I wondered if the guy even knew what it symbolized...
