Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) - Rent

Last edited Mon Jun 20, 2022, 08:46 PM - Edit history (1)

John Oliver discusses why rent has become increasingly unaffordable, what we can do to combat a system that is stacked against tenants, and, of course, Dakota Johnson’s complex relationship to limes.

And here's a "bootleg" version of the show which contains John's comments on current events (The America First Secretary of State Coalition - comprised of extreme midterm Secretaries of State candidates, TFG loyalists who still insist the 2020 election was illegitimate; Fathers Day "Zaddies." ) It won't last long, as usual:

3. Rental homes? On my block? Not any more!

My neighborhood is about five miles from a large Naval Air station, and up until last year, there were two houses on my block that were leased to Navy families, and we welcomed them with open arms. Sure, they didn't stay here long -- the family would get transferred within a year or two -- but they enhanced our community.

And then, along came the skyrocketing property values. The absentee owners of the lots saw where they could cash in on their "investments" and did so. (At least these owners waited until the Navy relocated families. rather than evicting them). In both cases, the property sold within hours of listing. The new owners are here, and they seem nice enough. But I'm hearing that these were not isolated cases. There is a definite and growing shortage of rentals available to active-duty military families.

We civilians on the block have chatted about the skyrocketing sale prices on property here, but we typically arrive at the same conclusion: "If we sell now (even if we make a bundle), where would we move? With property values over-the-moon pretty much everywhere, we're more or less stuck here."

Glad I didn't see this before going to bed last night. And not because of that clip from Peru!

As always, thanks for posting this!

And the same issue s also true of new cars right now, dealerships are contacting those they sold cars to - asking if they now want to sell! These are truly perilous times for all of us...
