(9,500 posts)I sure hope Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles have plans to reduce water use even more than they probably have already.
Even though farmers account for a lot of the water use, I doubt they are going to see cuts. Maybe we need to require them to plant food crops that require less water, because they seem to think they own all the water.

(1,927 posts)It's either that or cutting back usage. And I don't see cutting back usage being very popular.

(102,413 posts)the problems are immense...
Here's a good overview in general:

And her,e specific to coastal areas (California):

To boil some of it down, the expense is tremendous (albeit, what is not? ), It requires tremendous energy INPUTS, there are major technical limitations, and the waste products are a big problem-- especially for ocean and other water sources. But that is oversimplifying the issues. Sigh...

(9,500 posts)But that won't help Phoenix or Las Vegas. Unless California can get its water from elsewhere and sell the water its supposed to get from the Colorado to AZ and NV.

Debate spreads about Saudi dairy drilling wells in arid Arizona
By Nathan Halverson / November 16, 2015
Arizonans are debating what actions to take after a Reveal investigation showed the states limited aquifers are being drained to grow and ship crops overseas.
Local leaders in La Paz County, where a Saudi dairy company bought 15 square miles of land to grow water-intensive hay for export back to the Middle East, are asking Gov. Doug Ducey and state officials for help, the Associated Press reports:
We just want to make sure the people who have lived here, who have invested in La Paz County will not run out of water, said county Supervisor Holly Irwin.
Reveal disclosed that a Saudi dairy company and other corporations were buying large tracts of desert land in an unregulated part of the state, then drilling new groundwater wells, each capable of pumping 1.5 billion gallons of water annually for irrigation.

(9,500 posts)You can grow hay pretty much anywhere. I can somewhat understand that you probably are not going to be able to grow almonds, pistachios, and avocados in the upper Midwest.
