Who knows what he had in that compartment on his belt. They also have a right to execute the search warrant in a way that will preserve the evidence. Taking the phone off of his person keeps him from destroying evidence on it.

The best part is (according to what I heard on MSNBC tonight), his phone had a facial recognition password, so they just held his phone up to his stupid face to unlock it!
