In his 2007 address at the United Church of Christ General Synod, Obama gave an overview of how religion has been a part of American political history, reminding the audience that men and women of faith waded into the battles over prison reform and temperance, public education and womens rights and above all, abolition.
So doing the Lords work, Obama added later in the speech, is a thread thats run through our politics since the very beginning. And it puts the lie to the notion that the separation of church and state in America means faith should have no role in public life. Imagine [President] Lincolns Second Inaugural [Address] without its reference to the judgments of the Lord. Or [Martin Luther] Kings I Have a Dream speech without its reference to all of Gods children. Or President Kennedys Inaugural [Address] without the words, here on Earth, Gods work must truly be our own. At each of these junctures, by summoning a higher truth and embracing a universal faith, our leaders inspired ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.

(1,260 posts)Which Christian prayer in public schools? Which interpretation of the New Testament is going to rule this country? Catholic, Lutherans, Mormon, Jehovah Witnesses, Evangelicals, etc.? Pick one:

Someone should ask her ilk those questions. I do it regularly and get blank faces or the severely ignorant response "Well, I'm sure that we can come up with something that will satisfy all Christian denominations." HA!!!

But that is one thing that DOES NOT need amending.
ingling church and state currupts both of them.
(Which is why RWNJ evangelicals are so corrupt, both in office and as citizens - they believe in theocracy over everything else.)

(1,668 posts)Merging church and state brought the weeds of the world into the garden of the church. I wonder if Rhode Island is happy about the obviously weaker protections of religious liberty our constitution provides.
