New York City's Hudson River Now Home To Dolphins - The 11th Hour - MSNBC

Thanks to decades of conservation efforts, the Hudson River in New York City is the cleanest it’s been since the Civil War and is now home to dolphins. Aired on 07/08/2022.

But I'm aware that there's been all sorts of squabbling over the years about the clean up. I'm so glad to hear that it's working, I see numerous houses/camps on the river - good to know that these residents can use it safely again. I don't expect to see dolphins in my neck of the woods, but I know that after reading this when I cross the bridge over the Hudson, I'm going to look...

used the Hudson River as their own private toxic waste dump for decades. They dumped so many PCBs into it the river was "dead" for miles, unable to support any type of marine life whatsoever.

The plight of the river was brought to the world's attention by people like Pete Seger and many other environmentalists. I remember going to concerts with Pete Seger, Rambling Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie and others to help raise awareness of not only the Hudson River's troubles, but the St. Lawrence River's as well (Abie Hoffman got involved with that when he was on the run from the government). New York State and the Feds made them clean it up, dredging all those deadly toxic chemicals out of the rivers and disposing of them in a more environmentally friendly way (as if that's possible).

Lord, that seems like ages ago, but it worked. We got so many people, so pissed off about it (or us) that we forced them to do something about it. Peaceful protest used to work. Now we'd have Trump-humpers coming out of the woodwork, shooting their AR-15s into crowds of people because it's their Constitutional right to use the planet as their own personal garbage dump. And the Supreme Court would agree!

We've come a long way, but unfortunately there's still a long way to go. Capitalists haven't learned anything in all those years.

I remember the controversies - there were signs and bumper stickers back in the day, and I couldn't figure out why anyone would be against the cleanup. Some said it would negatively affect the marine life, but weren't they already being negatively affected by the pollution??

He had been a tireless activist for cleaning up the Hudson River.

Sailing down my dirty stream
Still I love it and I'll keep the dream
That some day, though maybe not this year
My Hudson River will once again run clear
It starts high in the mountains of the north
Crystal clear and icy trickles forth
With just a few floating wrappers of chewing gum
Dropped by some hikers to warn of things to come
At Glens Falls, five thousand honest hands
Work at the consolidated paper plant
Five million gallons of waste a day
Why should we do it any other way?
Down the valley one million toilet chains
Find my Hudson so convenient place to drain
And each little city says, "Who, me?
Do you think that sewage plants come free?"
Out in the ocean they say the water's clear
But I live right at Beacon here
Half way between the mountains and sea
Tacking to and fro, this thought returns to me
Well it's Sailing up my dirty stream
Still I love it and I'll dream
That some day, though maybe not this year
My Hudson and my country will run clear

in the River's cleanup. If it weren't for Pete and so many other environmentalists' (now all long gone) intervention the River might never have recovered.

We'd go to Haviland's Cove in Glens Falls, where the paper mills were. There was all kinds of stuff floating in that river and we were told to keep our eyes shut when under water, otherwise they would burn for a while afterward. When Pete started his crusade, I was doubtful that it could be done but, as you say, enough activists were committed to it that they worked something like a miracle.

and other chemicals to make nice, white, writing paper was dumped straight into the river. You're lucky you have any skin left on your body!

Besides GE there were so many other companies and people upstream from them who used the River as a dump. Out of sight, out of mind. It was all heading for the Atlantic Ocean anyway, and our Oceans can take it, right?

Thank our lucky stars we had people like Pete who cared enough to do something about it.

Those childhood memories will never leave you though. I grew up in western New York and remember toxic waste running into the Erie Canal. Pipes from factories like GE, Black and Decker etc. just pouring their toxic waste without any treatment whatsoever right into the Canal, and we all know where the Canal empties into: the Hudson. That doesn't even take into consideration the number of people whose toilets had direct piping into the Canal as well.

We humans are a stupid lot. Like I said, out of sight, out of mind. Farmers used to throw their dead livestock (there's any oxymoron for you) right into the Canal too. I remember seeing a dead cow floating by one day. I never swam in the Canal again. We had so many farm ponds to chose from, it wasn't a problem. Of course the fertilizer and pesticides in them were never a thought for us. Geez... it's lucky any of us are still alive!

Gotham Whale founder, Paul Sieswerda, is on a mission to document the rebounding humpback whale population in the New York City Harbor. Legislation passed in the 1970s, like the Clean Water Act, has contributed to the resurging numbers of the whale population.

That's wonderful! I'm so happy about that. Seeing whales with the New York skyline in the background would be such a treat.

I'm going to NYC for a week in October. I'm going to look into the whale-watching tour now.

Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for the link to keep track of sightings. I'll have to see if the whales will still be around in October. They might be headed south for better feeding by then. I hope not, but they have to do what their inherent instincts tell them. I'll let you know.
