We have been punishing them for 60 years; it is time to undo the mistakes of the past.

Yes US policy towards Cuba is counterproductive but we didn't make them a repressive one party dictatorship that jails and kills its critics.

Today, as Cuba careens through its worst economic crisis in 30 years, milk is one of the most potent symbols of the country’s precarious state. Cubans have been hit by mass shortages of dairy and other basic goods, reflecting a confluence of setbacks: The coronavirus pandemic crippled the vital tourism industry. Then-President Donald Trump squeezed the island with extra sanctions, and President Biden held off on reversing them. Socialist ally Venezuela reduced aid and investment.

The result: A nation that imports 70 percent of its food has run desperately short of the cash to buy it.

Authoritarian socialism simply isn't a good economic model.

Of course Cuba's problems are too extensive and complex to be adequately addressed in a forum like DU but desperately clinging to their old failed Soviet economic and political system is not a productive path forward.

They're an island and an embargo is a pretty big cause of lack of food.

This problem is a direct result of the US.

unwilling to move away of a failed political and economic system because it might dilute the power and authority of the Cuban Communist Party. Even if the US lifted its economic sanctions Cuba will still be an economic basket case mired in poverty.
