(133 posts)Horrible Violence. Several police on hand could not control and stop the fighting. The police officer is wrong for punching and throwing the student. It seems that many students were hit my police.
I don't have an answer. The students usually would stop fighting when police arrived, but they kept fighting with themselves and the police.
This frightening for the students and staff.
I don't have an answer.
Violence and anger is everywhere. That much seems clear. How it can be stopped, is less clear.

(657 posts)As a retired school teacher, I would like to see what happened 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after the video began recording. Turning 18 yrs old does not make an adult out of a kid. Usually schools have their own school police force. If you have to call in the next level up of a police force..such as the city police, the situation has already escalated. We also need to know the situation at the school. Does this school have a problem with physical fights? Kids are now physically attacking teachers. Teachers do not feel safe. Students have no fear of anything. Did the cop know there was a cart behind the kid? Do we know if there was a verbal confrontation before the kid was grabbed? Unless we know the 5 minutes before the fight began, we cannot accurately prejudge the situation. I have been physically assaulted by a student. Scared me to death .. High school students who fight are physically strong. I need more proof in order to convict the police.

(112,180 posts)There are three high schools in Irving and Nimitz High School is in the poorest part of the city. The last time I saw any statistics about the school district, it stated that there are 77 different languages spoken in the homes of the students so I'm surprised that there aren't more fights because of the diverse backgrounds (note: Irving is adjacent to DFW airport).
I also did a search and it indicated that Irving ISD has 21 school resource officers. Allowing for officers being at the other campuses and possibly being at a central office location, it is doubtful that there were more than three officers at the high school campus. From the video footage I doubt that three officers could handle that situation.
I also agree that we don't know anything about what occurred beforehand or any messages that the dispatcher provided to the officers about the situation.
It will be interesting to see if any of the students are expelled, but most likely they will be assigned to the alternative learning environment which just make them more violent and incorrigible. I also expect that a lawsuit will be filed by the student and his family for excessive force and between the city and the school district a six figure settlement will be paid.

(26,327 posts)He halls off on the back of some other kids head and then chases the kid down and jumps on a pile. Thats when the cop grabs him.
I guess the cop should have been more gentle when breaking up a full on Donnybrook. Maybe a pretty please would have sufficed.
