meaning most of its citizens are too young to remember the revolution against the Shah and the subversion of the revolution by the Islamic crazies who installed the Ayatollahs as new dictators to replace him. Those sanctimonious tyrants are resented by most of the young, which means most of the Iranian population.
One of the worst crimes committed against that country was the removal of their last democratically elected leader in order to install the Shah. Moaddeq was overthrown by a CIA led operation because he was uppity enough to insist on Iran's sovereignty and he was making noises about nationalizing their oil industry, something which would have been prudent but outraged the US oil boys.
The Shah was a tyrant who oppressed the country while giving it the outward appearance of western modernity by banning the veil, at least in the cities. This was met with deep resentment from both men and women and his secret police (SAVAK) were even worse than today's morality police.
I would love to see a lot of the sanctions against Iran eased. We created the whole mess when we ended their democracy. If we can keep Republicans from fucking things up again, they will overthrow the Ayatollah tyrants.

(Eisenhower got bullshitted into toppling that government as soon as he got into office. Truman had been to savvy to buy the CIA's bullshit and had resisted the idea. Cautionary tale for would be Presidents: don't listen to CIA motormouths for at least your first full year in office, until you've got a better idea of what is really going on)
