3 feet would have been bad enough, people tend to think of it as 3 feet of calm water, nor realizing it's topped with 6 foot waves.
Thanks for this. Local news on the coasts need to play this when it looks like a hurricane is going to hit the area. People need to know what a storm surge really is and they need to be reminded frequently.

(13,018 posts)I am a old salty Navy veteran. I served on a DDG, Guided Missile Destroyer. I would have been terrified on that ship on seas as tough as those streets got to. That is a horrific sight.

(13,018 posts)3,000 sailors on board vs 300 on a DDG. Had to had been one hell of a storm. Luckily never sail during a typhoon of hurricane. But ships in port during a major storm were ordered to sea to weather it out.

(39,154 posts)specific with me. The typhoon was one of the few things he did share with me. That, and "Guadalcanal was hotter than hell." I'm sure it was a lot more than that in 1942.
