(2,992 posts)This was claimed to be some sort of "wellness check;" if the police had reason to believe someone was in danger, they wouldn't necessarily need a warrant.
I am NOT saying the police acted appropriately here. That they wanted to secure a "potential crime scene" suggests - to me, anyway - that the "wellness check" could have been a pretext to act before a warrant could be obtained. I also think these officers could do with a refresher course on de-escalating situations like this. At the very least, they did a poor job of explaining what they were trying to do, which is all but guaranteed to complicate things. I also think the resident was right to be hacked off.
But without more context, this falls into a gray area for me - the police may have had some justification, but did so clumsily at best, and unless charges are forthcoming, they should at least apologize to the residents and offer to pay for any damages inflicted by the officers.

(1 post)This had NOTHING to do with any "wellness check".. That is NOT how you approach a household if a "wellness check" was the objective.
If the Police believed someone was in danger or in a life threatening situation, they would have given the name of the person in question at the door. They would have then forced their way in to look for said person and immediately opened all the room doors looking for said person. The Police never did any such thing.
On illegally entering the home they started to physically harass, intimidate, brutalise and arrest ALL occupants of the house and made absolutely no attempt to immediately search for any person with regards to any "wellness check". As the video clearly shows this was police intimidation, excessive force, illegal forced entry and abuse of power.
PEOPLE WHO MAKE EXCUSES FOR ROTTEN POLICE ARE JUST AS ROTTEN AS THE ROTTEN POLICE!!!

(2,992 posts)I explained that under some circumstances, the police can enter private property without a warrant for a wellness check. This is a fact.
I stated that additional context would have made the actual basis for their actions more clear. I don't necessarily think this was a legitimate wellness check - in fact, I said it could have been a pretext to act before they had a warrant - but I can't say that for sure.
I also made clear that even if the wellness check in this case was legit - and that's a big, big if - the police acted clumsily and unprofessionally. I was not, in any way, defending (or making "excuses" for them.
