(102,328 posts)This has to be on the minds of every player--NFL and college.
As I look forward to the NCAA Championship next Monday between UGA and TCU, I have to wonder what those players are thinking. I do, generally, think college football is a tiny bit safer given they do tend to enforce the rules and the players are (on average) not quite so big as the NFL, but still...
If I had a young son, I might let him play tag football, but I'd have to think long and hard about whether or not I'd want them to pursue full contact. Of course, baseball can be quite dangerous (even more likely to result in Commotio Cortis--however rare overall), and of course hockey. Yes, to those who say all sports can be dangerous, but there are definitely degrees of risk and levels of protection against them.

(8,790 posts)Crowds at MMA and Boxing. Many have died in NASCAR. If Jerry Jones and other stadium owners decided in off season to have Gladiator type events of fight until death, those stadiums would be sold out. Especially if it were blacks fighting to death. Or, sending Jews on the field to the Lions, no, real man eating starving lions. Again, sold out stadiums.
I mean look at the hate and rage of the football fans when they scan the crowds. Brutality has entertained us for thousands of years.
I quit going to Tennessee games with my daughter 6 years ago. I would leave many times in rage. Mostly opposing fans and their actions. (Cause we always lost until the last two years😢

(58,389 posts)I have been a football fan most of my life, the Vols, Minnesota Vikings under Bud Grant and the Titans after they came to Tennessee although I haven't followed the sport with near the passion I once had.
However, I can't help but pick up on a cosmic tie with Roman gladiator days insofar as real or potential sociological effect (s) on our society in both expense and diversion.

(12,396 posts)executions going on behind closed doors in prisons. What a fukkin waste. Let's put it to some good use.
First of all, we sell tickets on a national lottery to see who gets to hit the switch, pull the lever, pull the trigger or press the buttons.
Immediately, at $10 a ticket, 1/4 of the national debt is eliminated. Who wouldn't wanna be the guy to hitch the electrodes to the prisoner's nuts.
Then, instead of behind closed doors., we set it up on H.B.O. with a pay for view, live feed of the execution. $100 a tv. And more, if ya pay the prisoner to cry and scream when the lottery winner attaches the electrodes to his nuts....like Edward G. Robinson in that 1930's movie.
And ya repeat this for every execution and there will be no need for income taxes.
It's a win...win.
