Price Gouging: Moderna To Raise Vaccine Prices Over 400% - More Perfect Union

Moderna is planning to increase the price of its Covid vaccine from $26 to $130 — an increase of over 400%.

After U.S. taxpayers contributed $1 billion to the development of the vaccine, the company is gouging taxpayers to make shareholders rich. The vaccine costs just $2.85 to produce.

As we explain, the Biden administration has the power to step in to lower the price of this lifesaving drug.

In another longer thread, I have some issues with their claim of Moderna's price gouging. I consider myself to be very liberal/progressive, but sometimes disagree with other liberal progressives.

Take from this what you will.

The video loses credibility by starting off with this weasel-worded characterization.

The pricing of pharmaceuticals works much differently than, say, oil or clothing. It is more like software. The vast majority of the expenses are up-front during research and development and dwarf the manufacturing costs which come later. So, to arrive at unit pricing, you have to divide the projected gross revenue of the business plan by the customer base.

We are seeing that very customer base shrink as demand for the vaccines plummets. The vaccines aren't getting any less complex, nor is the FDA getting any less stringent in approving them. Simple division tells us to expect dramatic price increases. We have only our fellow apathetic Americans to blame for this.
