Will Erdogan ever let Sweden and Finland join NATO? - TLDR News EU

Despite applying to join in May to a mostly warm reception, Sweden and Finland still haven't joined NATO with Turkey continuing to block their accession. So what's happening? Why is Erdogan still refusing to back down? And will this change any time soon?

I suspect that it was put in the NATO charter back when there were only 12 nations in the alliance. TexasTowelie Jan 2023 #4

So Sweden/Finland can't ....officially.... join NATO. The can't get their official NATO Membership card or NATO Member's window sticker for their Volvo. Can't go to the NATO meetings. Can't go to the summer convention at The Grove Park Inn.

But there's no prohibition from a country doing all other mutually beneficial defense ....things... any country can do with any NATO Member. Coordinate defense strategies and armament just like you would if Sweden/Finland were members. Send some NATO member, let's say Denmark, to meet Sweden/Finland and treat them as though they were, card carrying members and f *ck Turkey.

Oh and next summer at the convention, maybe Turkey's hotel rooms aren't ready for a few hours. Maybe the AC doesn't work in their rooms. Maybe all the other members are already paired up for the golf tourney. Maybe a waiter...oops... spills water on The Turkey NATO rep.

Get my drift?

Other than for strategic importance and their history with the UK, Türkiye (I'm forcing myself to use the new spelling) doesn't have much in common with the other nations in NATO.
