2. The rather large knife the man was carrying may've dissuaded them from that approach

Not saying this is overall 'okay' by any stretch, just addressing that particular aspect.

Charge them or jump up and stab them (because there was 2 of them and one of him)in the chest.

Trying to overwhelm him, given the large knife, involved at least a small possibility that in so doing, one or both may've been injured, perhaps even fatally.

But they're trained that their job is never to risk their lives (or even physical harm) if they can possibly avoid it, no matter what the cost is to any members of the public. And society largely goes along with this premise.

Personally think they should all have tranquilizer darts in the trunk as a fallback when tazing doesn't work.

And they value others' lives not at all. Especially those who are challenged in some way. To my mind this was homicide

My God, all those able-bodied men and none of them could figure out a better way to handle that?

American cop culture is horrid. "When in doubt, shoot. Expose yourself to zero risk. If any force is justified, make it lethal force. We're not serving citizens; we're an occupying force." That about sums it up.
