(21,667 posts)To Brazilian right-wingers - who, as you know, recently even attempted a coup - it's only "a matter of time" until they're back in the saddle.
And they see Santos as a (potentially) useful future U.S. congressional liaison for when that day comes.
If only he weren't such a runaway criminal, and such an embarrassment!

(206,016 posts)And appears completely believable after what we've come to know about Santos. He said that Santos was "on the lam," wanted in Brazil for major theft, but they gave up after they were unable to locate him. So what did he do?? Ran for Congress!

(21,667 posts)Sorry. I didn't mean to sound facetious.
I'm referring to the current, revived Brazilian investigation.
There was some speculation that President Lula da Silva might even hand an arrest warrant against Santos to Biden during their upcoming Oval Office meeting.
But even if it were Lula's place to do so (there are, of course, other channels), it's unlikely that we'll see Brazilian justice move with that much alacrity in this case - for the political reasons I mentioned earlier.
As long as the Brazilian right finds Scamtos "useful," you can bet they'll lean on the judiciary to drag their feet.
Sadly, that's the relationship between politics and jurisprudence in Latin America - more often than not.
