Same goes for the "Satanic child sacrifice" tropes.

They thought Cheeto was going to put a stop to any of it?

He'd be the first in line!

The Dunning-Kruger phenomenon seems too obvious but it might explain a good deal of what's up with these freaks so long as we also consider social identity theory and its implications for out-group bias.

Trump supporters really care about the details. They joined a club or a tribe and now they have to fit the bizarre ideology into their world view. They just want to be part of the group. They've already invested a lot of time, energy, and often money - too late to turn back now!

Over time, most of them will just gradually pull away and probably go back to some version of their previous lifestyle, but few will do it openly as they will be hesitant to admit they were wrong. It was like living in a reality TV show for them and a chance to meet new people I suppose.
