"[Turkey is] preventing NATO from strengthening at this moment when we have a Russian attack in Europe."
Ukraine should have a 'rapid membership' to the EU, Finland's foreign minister, Pekka Haavisto, says.

(127,367 posts)is for that nation to violate the NATO charter. Despite the disagreements that NATO has with Turkey (and Hungary to a lesser extent), they have not violated the charter. The opposition that Turkey is showing is to Sweden and they seem willing to approve Finland to join the group. While Sweden should also be in the organization, they aren't as vulnerable to Russian actions since they do not share a common border.

(114,616 posts)Turkey doesn't seem to have much of an objection to Finland, that's all dictator Orban, who doesn't want to give his buddy Putin a sad by allowing obvious candidates to swell NATO's ranks. He can be persuaded.
Sweden seems to be squished between its left and right wings, one protecting the Kurds and the other protesting against all the Muslims coming into the country. They might have to remain neutral for a while, but they'll still trin with NATO.
It's hard to say what will happen with Turkey, Erdogan played favorites with his earthquake response and a lot of people noticed. He's looking a little shakier than he did 6 months ago and the next guy might be more reasonable. Oh, and even Erdogan has been very quietly supplying Ukraine, they've got 2 of Turkey's advanced surveillance drones, among other things.

(127,367 posts)rather than with the remainder of NATO or Ukraine. However, Erdogan has also tried to remain in a friendly position with Putin.
The polls are showing that Erdogan is doing poorly and may lose in the election later this year. Whether those polls can be relied upon is another question and there is some discussion that Erdogan would relent to Sweden's bid to join NATO if he is reelected since he would have the political capital to expend.
Sorry about the thread title, but I try to keep it close to what is on YouTube to help prevent duplicate posts in this forum (whether anyone else looks is another matter). There is room for editorializing throughout the remainder of the thread.

(114,616 posts)The central and eastern part of Turkey is Erdogan's base, so when earthquake relief was applied so unevenly, it pissed one hell of a lot of people off. Since then, he's done some crawling and apologizing, we'll see if it's enough to keep him in power. He didn't do enough of it to suit me, but I don't live there.

(127,367 posts)except to insert identifiers (person, place) or to edit for brevity. I see too many other members editorialize in their subject lines which leads to multiple postings of the same video. One of the videos that I posted on Friday of last week was reposted twice--if only those members had done a search on the title they would have located it since I used the EXACT title and identified the media source that produced the video.
There are generally about 10-12 hours of video content posted most weekdays on DU. If I can do something minimal like including an exact title rather than something that I create out of blue air, then I'll stick with the former even if it includes words like "destroyed" and "humiliated."
