Steve Schmidt reveals who is responsible for the degradation of the Republican party

The "Lost Cause" nonsense is, to me, especially telling, as it provides a distant early warning of people who shall simply refuse to accept that they've lost. In the 19th century it was military; in the 21st, it's political.

I subcribe to his substack, and I often do.

But, exactlt because he was on the inside, he's pretty clear-eyed about what happeed.

And how does refusing to listen (and evaluate) differ from those who will listen to nothing but Fox?

Yes I only listen to people I agree with.

You seem to know me. Not at all.

Also I’m not the only one on this thread that feels the same. Just because someone says the the right shit now doesn’t mean they didn’t contribute to the actual shit.

Let me also say that he said shit about H Clinton that people like Wallace and Steele did not.

onto the national stage, a huge error. He recognized the error and his complicity in it. He was at hand to witness the destruction of the republican party.

But IMO he's redeemed himself.

This video should be required viewing for civics classes and new citizenship aspirants all over the nation.

My dividing line is that anyone who remained a rethug after the Gingrich era is suspect. That guy was so vile that anybody with an ounce of self awareness or a shred of truth left in their being would have disavowed the political party that went along with his poison.

Maybe Schmidt has done his due penance. I haven't really followed him or paid attention to what he's been doing. If he has really seen the light, good on him. If this 180 is just more political theater, he can go straight to hell.

I have heartburn of welcoming "former" R's into our "big tent." While I would welcome those who are true converts, I also am cynical enough to realize the damage they can do, the seeds of dark plans they can plant, and the disunity they can sow among us.

I am willing to suspend disbelief IF they do the hard work and do it sincerely. There has to be something more than just words. For now, tho, the words are a small salve.

Words are the easy part. For words he's gotten paid. Like an opportunist.

Given that, it's only the work that counts. Free agents in politics don't help save democracy in spite of the .01% and the rest of Earth's autocrats. Free agents who don't do the work are free riders.

what are we going to do to fix this? What can be done to Fox and RW media and media in general? Can we require truth in the news with clear punishment for knowing violators like Fox, Newsmax and their ilk? Can you have “News” in your name and claim in court that you are not news but “entertainment”? That is deliberately misleading.

We will continue down this path unless and until we stop the propaganda in the news and reign in the campaign donations, Super PACs, Dark Money, and the Revolving Door. I do not hear of any plans to do what it will take to get our Democracy back on track. We hear these problems repeatedly but never any proposed solutions. Other than the Dominion and Smartmatic trials, we hear nothing at all on how to stop the lies. With Tucker Carlson’s recent attempt to white wash of 1/6, which came out right after his text messages, it is apparent that Fox will continue to lie to keep their audience. They are not reporting their duplicity to their audience so it is clear it will be business as usual.

Let us demand action on this!

no one has a clue what we should o to reverse the course.

There are a number of professional historians who are currently active an analyzing our situation. Heather Cox Richardson comes to my mind, because I follow her, but she is far from alone. I am not a professional historian, only a bit of a history buff, but I canot think of a single time in history that a nation with more or less good government started a decline into autocracy but the people, or some group of the people, saw it happening and prevented it. Can you? I think if any professional historian could, he or she would have mentioned it by now.

Instead, we are in new territory. The closest thing I can call to mind is the actions of Germany after WWII, which included a natinal recking, and a deliberate looking at the evil done. In other words, everything white supremacists in every state are doing their best to remove from our schools (which were never very good at presenting it in the first place.) I still think that's a good idea, but before we can even consider it, we need to get out of the place we are currently in, and more into the light, and I have no idea how that is to be accomplished.

If you have any serious ideas, or know anyone who does, you would be doing all of us a favor to present them.

He has been a solid honest contributor to MSNBC for years now and like Nicolle Wallace, sees the Republican Party for what it has become: an absolute danger to this democracy.

Have never gotten over the civil war.

Republicans have tolerated and let these fuckers who cant get over it into thier ranks. The republican party now has let these assholes take over thier party.

I wonder how many republicans are secretly ok with this behind closed doors.

Everyone at FOX knew what was going on, that would most certainly include the owner.

This seems like going after Jacob Marley over Ebenezer Scrooge, Marley is a ghost, too late for accountability or reform.
