rather than THE British reaction, I think.

Racists and fascists are not strictly an American phenomenon.

I marvel at the fact that ever since 1619 the American people are disgustingly racist. I've spent 75 years on this planet and racism has put a target on my back. Trump brought out the truth of the ugly, ugly people who had been waiting for the proper fascist to unleash their hate on 'the others'. And because that racist hate has been generational, I fear it is here to stay in millions of odious AmeriKKKans.

I'd like very much to find a better country, but circumstances will likely prevent us moving, so my wife and I will continue to make our home a place safe from bigotry and hatred, though we feel surrounded and outnumbered. Besieged, even.

I feel like a fool for having thought the people of this country were making great progress during my lifetime (I'm 64), and that the hateful were losing ground.

We can't surrender.

The fact, the deal, is that with every democratic election the majority speaks and is heard. This IS the crux, the fulcrum upon which all the best hopes of civilization rest. This is a primal call to the best of humanity to do what's better.

There are, however, some complications.......Republicans cheat at elections. It's a total denial of respect for the will of the people. What's to be done when a party, one of two, becomes a charade of their version of the will of the people? Everyone realizes that the system will probably break down if the political partners don't agree to oppose each other in a joint effort to, ultimately, preserve the nation. So long as top tier political actors continue defaming and denying the self-evident reality of an equal playing field, what, indeed, can be relied upon except a resurgence of the worst of the historical "us"? The despair is universal and eternal. Life is not necessarily better for sentient brings vs all the other critters.

They can't prevail without cheating or forcing, as they are are still, I believe, a minority.

While the majority's voice may be strong and just, it's being drowned out by the strident shrieking lies of the attention grabbing minority, it seems. I hope.

I don't watch TV. I drive past a 'Trump 2024 - Fuck Your Feelings' banner stuck to the outside of a house every day, and my wife's brothers-in-law are a dim-wit Trumpist and a German-born Nazi, but I know justice from injustice, and I'm past fed up.

The historical "us" are no friends of mine. Leaving doesn't change it, but damn, I want to live amongst people I can trust and respect.

Perhaps the most troubling aspect is that it hasn't so much changed as it has been revealed - and it's been growing like a tumor while I've been revelling in "progress."

Thank you for your thoughtful words, jaxexpat.

My guess is that, to many in Britain (and elsewhere), the Cheeto self-coup attempt was shocking in that conventional wisdom has long had it that "that kind of thing only happens in the third world."

But then, one of our two major parties is now the Banana Republicans.
