(16,423 posts)If you demolish a building, you have to bring the rubble to a landfill... and putting something into a landfill costs money.
In my hometown, there was a certain supermarket. In a really ugly, really old building. The owners wanted to tear it down to build a nicer building. So they hired the cheapest possible demolition-crew they could find.
They demolished the building alright... and then they brought in truckloads of rubble from other construction-sites and heaped it on as well. They were essentially using the property of the demolished supermarket as an illegal landfill and made some money over it... and then they bailed and were never heard from again, leaving their landfill behind.
It wouldn't surprise me if the chinese company demolished more than they were allowed to to create extra rubble, in order to then use this pile to "launder" rubble from elsewehere and make some extra cash.
