This is the most obvious and blatant example of voter suppression, the Republicans didn't like the winning candidates, just expel them!

Now the legislators are threatening to defund the districts that Jones and Pearson represent if they are reelected just because those GOP legislators are spiteful.

And I blame Andrew Johnson who thwarted Reconstruction after Lincoln's death. The plan was to give all Freedmen 40 acres and a mule, but Johnson returned much of that land to the former Southern owners so they would "owe" him. And so the unequal treatment continued. Got this from the Reconstruction series on PBS.
