Josh Hawley Gets Spanked By Democratic Challenger In Campaign Fundraising - Ring of Fire

Republican Senator Josh Hawley got absolutely spanked by his Democratic challenger Lucas Kunce in the first quarter fundraising totals for this year. Kunce raised over a million dollars - mostly from grassroots donors in amounts less than $200 - while Hawley came in about $300,000 shy of Kunce's haul. Could this be a sign that Missouri is reversing its right wing trend from recent years, or is it a mirage like the money that was given to other Democratic candidates only for them to lose badly in their races? Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins analyzes what's happening.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley is getting his butt kicked by his Democratic opponent, Lucas Kutz. And in the first quarter fundraising of this year, Kutz raised a staggering $1.13 million compared to Josh Hawley's $816,000. So Holly, a sitting Republican senator, was out raised by his Democratic opponent in a red state by roughly $300,000. That is not a small feat, that is a major accomplishment. This is something to be celebrated, but you also gotta celebrate it quickly and move on because I don't wanna burst anyone's bubble here, but we have seen this story before. We have seen this story, believe it or not, far too many times in American politics in just the last eight years, you have a disgusting, very much disliked Republican senator. And when I say very much disliked, I mean outside of their state's borders, these people are generally not liked at all. And the names that come to mind are Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, and Lindsey Graham. And in each and every one of those men's most recent elections, they were met with a democratic opponent who out fundraised them. Lindsey Graham, of course, was out raised by Jamie Harrison. Mitch McConnell was outraged, uh, out raised by Amy McGrath. Ted Cruz got stomped in fundraising by Beto O'Rourke. But when it came time to vote, each one of those men cruise to a fairly easy victory. Ted Cruz had the hardest fought victory, but Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, that wasn't even a contest.

They won in spite of the fact that their democratic opponents had so much more money on hand. And a worry that that could be the situation that we're looking at with Koons here. Hopefully it's not, hopefully this is not history repeating itself for the fourth time in six years. But I'm not too optimistic about this. And that's no offense to Koontz. I think you're a good candidate, but I've gotta look at reality. We have to look at the other scenarios where this has happened. So the question is, what happened in those races, right? How did these Democrats get so much money and then lose so badly in the elections? Because let's be clear here. Josh Hawley is a, is a senator in Missouri. Missouri is trending more and more. Red Holly beat incumbent Democrat, Claire

McCaskill by five points. Trump carried the state of Missouri by 15 points in 2020. It's a red state and apparently getting redder. So how is Koontz out raising these individuals? Well, to be honest, we don't know. We have not been able to get a hold of the comprehensive list of donors yet. But I can tell you what happened in those other three races with uh, uh, Harrison McGrath and O'Rourke. Yeah, they out raised their opponent, but that was money coming from outta state, coming from individuals who don't get to vote in those races. So as I said, it doesn't matter how many people outside of your borders hate that candidate because they don't get to vote, at least not in that race. So whenever you see big fundraising halls like this against a hugely unpopular Republican, you can be glad about it. But you also have to look at it through the lens of history because we have seen far too many Democrats come out look like they're spanking their Republican opponents only to lose by, you know, massive margins in some cases. So temper your expectations because some of that money is likely coming from people who will not be voting in Missouri in 2020.
