(11,780 posts)The war has shown Russian equipment to be over rated. Though its really showing their poor tactics, possible customers for Russian arms are going to be turned off.
I cant remember if I read it here or elsewhere, but the details of the sinking of their Black Sea flagship cruiser are illuminating. The ship was the pride of their fleet with a very impressive host of armaments including a 3 tiered air defense, but was sunk by a couple relatively inexpensive cruise missiles. Turns out only one of their longest range air defense missiles was functional as well as their close defense Gatling gun style weapons (only one functional). Their radar systems were mostly not working due to expensive parts being stripped and sold on the black market. And probably the biggest thing, their fire control systems were also largely not functional for similar reasons; stolen parts, fire extinguishers missing. Also throughout the entire ship many important pieces of equipment were locked up for protection and unavailable quickly. All Putins war has accomplished is showing the world that Russia is a paper Tiger.

(114,321 posts)They got things like the heat/radar shielding right and that's about it. The electronics, state of the art for Russia, are about 20 years behind the west even when they work and they're glitchy. The auto loader fires at less than half the rate of a human loaded tank and the isolation of the crew compartment, while improving the odds of surviving a serious hit, also prevents the crew from accessing the breech should the engine be knocked out, ending the auto loading ability.
The only one confirmed in Ukraine is in Luhansk, probably the safest oblast right now, and just across the border from Russia, where it can likely be retrieved very quickly should the Ukrainians get too close, they don't want one of these things to be captured. Most likely, it's there for propaganda purposes, "see? Only the best for our soldiers!"
Had this thing worked as advertised and had it met production goals, it might be terrifying. As it is, it's a target for the Ukrainians to figure out the best way to kill it.
