Related: About this forumWhat Do Conservatives Actually Like About Star Trek?
This rolled up on me this afternoon and though it's a bit dated I found it nicely said.

(114,671 posts)but contains a lot more. I'd have summed it up by saying conservatives have a generally superficial understanding of anything and everything around them so having even the OS shows batter a political point home with a baseball bat didn't penetrate their psyches. Stuff that progressives and even true moderates picked up within seconds escaped the conservatives completely.

(10,943 posts)... I've wondered about this, too. In SoCal, I've become acquainted with fandoms. Star Trek is one with a noticeable "conservative" appeal. I also find the franchise to be blatantly progressive/liberal. I'm told, "Why do you have to see politics in everything?" Well, Star Trek makes it so obvious...
... Maybe you hit on it with the sense of "control" in the military-type order to the universe. There is also a solid group of conservatives who adore Dark Shadows. I had more success in talking out some reasons with that one. They see the "good vs evil" part of the show is supported by religion; specifically, Christian religion. The "cross" harms vampires and Satan is a commanding character, behind-the-scenes.
... So, I ask, how about the evil Reverends? Well, they say, they are evil, but God/Jesus/Satan all exist in that universe. They are real, not just ideas. I get that point of view and am surprised that I'm not able to apply it to Star Trek. A third "why do they like" a TV series comes up with comedy.
... Physical comedy is universal. Everyone can like Lucy - but there were big lovers of All in the Family who were conservatives. Norman Lear - the show's creator - spoke about it occasionally... People laughed when Archie Bunker made fun of the "liberal" meathead. To me, the progressive tilt was obvious... but conservatives laughed at Mike the Meathead. They were laughing with Archie Bunker, not at him!

Thanks for posting. The points are all valid but I couldn't help thinking during his entire analysis that the conservatives have become experts at self-denial in every respect which allows them to project an incorrect version of themselves allowing them to watch the series without any self-reflection.
