How Trump 'failed' America: Icon Bob Woodward decodes damning 'Trump Tapes' with MSNBC's Ari Melber

Pulitzer-Prize winner Bob Woodward says he had “never seen such a failure to protect the people” until his reporting on President Trump’s handling of Covid. The Washington Post journalist did 20 interviews with Trump as president, and in this special edition of “The Beat,” he talks to Ari Melber about what came through in those candid conversations as the pandemic first hit.

Melber also breaks down a key period of the pandemic, playing excerpts of Woodward’s tapes and other source material to offer a broader look at Trump’s handling of the crisis, which is newly relevant as Trump runs to return to the White House. This video is an extended digital exclusive. - The Beat - MSNBC - Aired on 07/11/2023.

was behaving in spite of the warnings.

We knew, of course, that he was not responding appropriately to the situation. But this drives home just how bad it was.

I also liked the credit, appropriately given, to Biden for setting up a structure to handle the pandemic and getting the vaccines out to everyone. By that time, though, Trump's lies had done so much damage to the credibility of health care experts that thousands of people died needlessly because they believed that vaccines and medical experts were "the enemy."

The ultimate irony is that, if Trump had warned the public and had mobilized efforts to secure tests, masks, ventilators, and whatever medicines were available, he would have been elected in a landslide in 2020. He is his own worst enemy.

Mary Trump has written and talked about how Fred Trump would not allow anyone around him to admit to being ill or to take care of themselves when they were sick. They had to continue to go about their business as if nothing was wrong with them. Trump inflicted that attitude on the entire nation and caused the deaths of over a million people. Two of them were my last remaining uncle and my last remaining sibling, my brother. Trump should be tried for criminally negligent homicide.

TFG is responsible for the thousands of deaths in this country from Covid since he did not take action, spread inaccurate information and refused to listen to experts - like Dr. Fauci. And I have Mary Trump's books as well - and remember that she said that the Obama administration had complied a pandemic playbook - for Ebola - but the TFG administration tossed it away.
