(256,404 posts)Good luck with that! However, I have often wondered how history will remember this bizarre and unprecedented period in this country. How will they teach history in the future?? Or will they dispense with teaching it altogether?
When I was in school, I remember learning about the Civil Rights Movement and our senators in 9th grade, 10th grade was World History and 11th grade was American History.

Im not a doctor but I play one on DU. Conservatism in America today is a mental illness. Hell bent on destroying whomever and whatever for no plausible reason. Their oath. First, do as much harm as possible.

(256,404 posts)Would they be happy giving up all their rights - freedom to vote, freedom of speech?? Did those January 6th insurrectionists really want to overthrow the democracy we have and live under a Putin-like authoritarian government?? Or are they just hopelessly deluded? What did they think would actually happen?

(44,738 posts)They dont know what a democracy is. They dont know what an autocracy is. They dont understand why elections have to be fair. They dont know much and view right wing sights and news shows as some kind of 24/7 political porn. It makes them feel good. It makes them feel wanted and needed. And when their would be lover kicks them to the curb they know without a doubt it was someone elses fault. Howd ya like to be in that brain?

(256,404 posts)I guess I was lucky, here in New York we started early. As I said above, I remember learning about the Civil Rights Movement in 9th grade - and who our senators were. 10th grade was World History, there was no doubt that the nazis were horrible, not that we didn't already know that. And 11th grade was American History - we girls did skits and I portrayed James Garfield and John Hancock. Don't they still teach that history today??

(256,404 posts)I admit that I was shocked when we learned that the KKK was still active in Tennessee. There was a new boy in my class in 10th grade who came from SC - and the rumor was that his mother had been "secretary" to some high poobah in the KKK. And this guy was truly a bigot, and a misogynist, too. I was on a team with him and was better than he was so he did not like me at all. He was definitely an anomaly around here.
And thanks for the explanation, I understand the "freedom of speech" thing, but there has to be a way to prevent these right wing sites from spreading misinformation and inciting the violent and deluded. These are scary times and this is the reason.

Im sad to post this but my Grandpa was in the KKK in Indiana back in the 1920s. Barely remember him but I have pictures of him holding me. Not an excuse but it was not unusual for any white guy to be in the KKK in the 1920s in Indiana. Obviously he didnt rub off on me. Hed disown me today and Id be thankful.
