Yesterday I witnessed first hand what a trigger post from criminal defendant Trump can rain down on the target of his ire.

Megan Rapinoe got both barrels, as so called ‘patriots’ launched a full frontal assault on a women’s soccer legend.

This is a woman who was part of the 2011 World Cup team who were runners up. Won a gold with the national team at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, Part of the 2015 , and 2019 World Cup winning team. Also in 2019, she was winner of the Ballon d'Or Féminin and named The Best FIFA Women's Player.

She missed a penalty. It happens. Messi has missed 25 of them, one in the Copa America final resulting in a loss for Argentina. As for her smile after the miss, I suspect it was more a nervous smile, because she knew what would follow.

Her achievements count for absolutely nothing when defendant Trump placed a target on her back. For me, it brought into sharp focus, the power of his words and the potential for real intimidation in his upcoming trials.

It appears that her capital crime was to kneel for the national anthem and offer support for trans athletes. While I may not support her views when it comes to elite level sport, I absolutely respect her right to offer that support.

As for taking the knee. Grow up is what I say. It’s now a well established global statement of support for minority groups subjected to discrimination.

I’m just relieved others felt the way I did. I remain in shock at the level of hate.
