Just when you thought it was safe to go back into crowded public spaces without a mask, a new COVID variant that can bite through vaccines has arrived. This wasnt a summer flu, its not even a lapse in immunity, its EG5 the new COVID variant. EG5 is on the loose this summer and any expert would tell you, it's a killer. (8,999 posts)They moved to NJ recently. They were vaxxed and boosted so their illness was short lived. Thankfully.

(8,655 posts)And we have been very careful in a part of the Midwest where sewer data is low.
Everyone in our family still masks, but workplaces are only as safe as the workplace policies.
This is the first time I got hassled in a store - ever - for masking by a couple of mouth-breathers standing next to my cart containing an air purifier and meds.

(7,232 posts)so it becomes a matter of opinion. Flu season occurs every year and spikes and people die from it (particularly the elderly) but we've had Covid twice - once months after fourth shot and one months after 5th. Neither was particularly any worse than a cold. Paxlovid is available. Another new shot is coming. Some people still die but many the unvaccinated except those at risk as they would be to flu or who don't take Paxlovid in time.
The danger of death or Long Covid will likely be around for a long time but whether it qualifies any more as a pandemic, at least in most advanced countries that have easy access to vaccines and Paxlovid, is a matter of debate.

(9,034 posts)the falling case rate had been slowing, then cases bottomed out in mid june, then slowly began rising in an accelerating way. The curve looks like the bottom of a bowl. The time from the slowing of the falling case rate - to the bottom of the bowl - to now rising cases is something like 4 months.
We have had 4 months to do something about getting the message out, but, hey lets wait till cases are really rising again before even noticing, then lets call it a spike.
