(10,893 posts)Gabby Giffords kinda looks like Orly Taitz with that hair style and that facial expression.

(3,186 posts)I just felt this was a good place to voice my opinion. Nothing more. I meant no disrespect to you.
However, if I were to amend my post, it'd be to change the word "looks" to "is"... As in "Gabby Giffords is beautiful'... Much more apt description IMO.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

(10,893 posts)Nowhere in my post did I say that she was ugly. I don't even think Orly looks that bad for her age. I had just said that I thought her hair and her facial gestures look the same as Orly's in that photo. That's all.

(10,597 posts)I see absolutely no resemblance. The hairdo Gabby has is the hairdo she had on that horrible day in Jan of 2011. And facial expression? WHAT facial expression are you talking about?
Me thinks you need to clean your glasses,
or maybe a stiff drink so you can become a little more sociable?
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)all I was doing was talking about how serious Giffords looked in that photo, and how Taitz usually looks overly-serious. But to each his own.

(14,887 posts)a traumatic brain injury, I can tell you the facial expression is very slow to fade. The first time I saw my reflection in a mirror, I was shocked. I had no control over the 'deer in the headlights' expression frozen in my face. I could not relax the muscles in my face. It was about 3 weeks before my face began to return to normal. Ms Giffords' injury was much more severe than mine.
Much depends on the area of the brain damaged. My brain injury paralyzed my left side, affected my swallowing reflex, made it difficult to follow text as it wrapped from line to line and heightened my taste of salt. Physical therapy is necessary to regain some of the functions lost. Teaching my leg and foot to work again was the hardest job I've ever had.
Don't even get me started on what it takes to comb and style hair w/ one hand/arm. If she is using a wig, it is probably because it saves her 45 minutes in the morning.

(16,350 posts)Such a painful experience and you, as a survivor, have valuable insight to offer. Thank you, sweetie. I learn from you. I wish you all the best.

(135,425 posts)recover from a brain stem stroke, and I can empathize with you-- it's not an easy road, even with aggressive therapy and repetition, repetition, repetition.
It takes courage.

(16,350 posts)I know you don't mean anything by this post, but how she looks is hardly relevant to this discussion. Actually, she looks fantastic considering what she's gone through. Don't you think? Can you imagine?
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)You basically assumed that I was calling her ugly, which I wasn't. To be honest, I don't think Orly Taitz is ugly for her age, but I digress. All I was saying is that I thought Giffords looked like Taitz with that hairdo and having such a serious-looking facial expression, and I pretty much got flamed on by multiple posters for saying that.

The English language certainly does allow us to silently advertise our intent while yet hiding behind the very words we use.

(33,982 posts)I can't believe this thread so quickly devolved (above) into a discussion on her appearance.
Here. Of all places.

(20,018 posts)...that she looks just fantastic.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)I agree. She looks strong and healthy, and that is so amazing.
Some of the comments upthread seemed to be going somewhere that, for instance, you wouldn't normally see such commentary about male politicians going. So that depressed me a bit.
FiveGoodMen
(20,018 posts)But I really was going to post that she looks fully recovered and overall just great.

(1,805 posts)I feel like I'm reading a Yahoo article or some gossip rag. WTF does her appearance have a damn thing to do with the discussion on guns?? I'm stunned. And upset. This doesn't belong on DU or anywhere else. Should she have worn her pajamas and slippers? Disgusting.

(31 posts)What is up with Wayne LaPierre's FACE? Could central casting come up with a more evil visage? And why does he look so disturbingly like Donald Rumsfeld and televangelist Robert Schummer? That high-cheekbone, reptilian-eyes thing is so prevalent among these types, it always makes me wonder if spawns of Satan actually share familial characteristics.
