Long songs, abundant soloing. Santana fans (and headbangers) loved them, but they didn;t sell many records.
Their manager Herbie Herbert basically shoved a Steve Perry demo tape at them and said "You're hiring this guy as your new front man."
They all acted like spoiled children until the first paychecks started rolling in. They liked that part and became increasingly commercial.
Here's the title track from the second album, which sounds nothing like the band they would soon become:
