(130,538 posts)not so much because it tastes better (it doesn't), but because when you turn over the can the stuff lands in the dish with a satisfying *splort* and it's imprinted with the seams from the can. It's just a fun childhood memory.

(11,179 posts)That made my day less depressing and made me laugh!!! Gratitude sent!
I dont like any kind of cranberry sauce but its obligingly on the Thanksgiving table. The only one who likes it is my brother and hes fine with the splooch variety. Cleaning up after the meal, the rest of the .99/can Giant brand stuff goes down the disposal.

(6,568 posts)There's a texture about whole cranberries that I find off putting, but I love me some sliced, can-shaped cranberry jelly.

1 lemon
1 orange
1 bag fresh cranberries
handful pom seeds
sugar to taste
cut up the lemon and orange and put them through the food processor, and then the bag of cranberries. add sugar to taste. best if allowed to sit overnight, chilled, to meld flavours.
after t-day, run the relish through the food processor with a brick of cream cheese, for a great spread for your turkey sandwiches.
optional adds: pomegranate arils, jalepeno, nuts.

(19,458 posts)We made it in a hand cranked grinder. It was messy and we loved doing it. No pom seeds in our recipe.
We had a large glass condiment plate with compartments that had the relish, the canned jelly, home made whole berry, tiny gherkins, black olives and green olives.
I like all variants of the sauce, fresh or canned, but it has to be good quality.
ETA: I forgot the cocktail onions that were on the plate as well.

(132,446 posts)I just finished seeding a dozen poms--messy, but sooooo much fun!!

(19,458 posts)It had raw veggies and home made dips.
I wonder what became of those dishes. I have the one for deviled eggs. It really is time to go through those last boxes from the estate.

(28,493 posts)I no longer care for the taste of the canned stuff.
The only time I had a homemade version it was awful, but that was probably more a reflection of the particular recipe and the person who made it.

(2,404 posts)Cucina Antica brand is the best I've ever had, store bought. Comes in a glass jar with a brown paper label. It's spendy, but you can taste the cloves and orange peel and nutmeg. It's excellent.
