An infected sinus, though it maybe tooth related and I may have to have a root canal done. Ugh.

My son had tonsillitis last week and initially was given a child's dose of antibiotics, so while he didn't worsen, he didn't improve. 3 days of that before they figured it out that it wasnt enough, and the following day he really picked up.

Sinus, grab a Nettee pot at the RX store.

Soar throat. I take an eighth of a tea spoon of cayenne pepper. Swish it around in about 2 oz of cold water. Toss it in to the back of your throat and swallow. Gone.

Started Wed with a cough that intensified all night. Plus spitting up. Thurs morn my throat was burning, plus headache. Still cooked my mother's holiday recipies, and otherwise no bodily probs. But to bed three days, still fiend coughing. Got theraflu that covered all the bases plus expectorant. Next prob rib cage muscle pain, don't know if from coughing or expectorant, stopped after three doses. Today, fourth day, rib pain much gone, still coughing but throat better, still spitting up.

Sound familiar? Yay, not flu!1

unsusual for my partner and I to get sick together but we both got a slight hint Tuesday and by Wednesday night driving to his parents we were both full blown colds.

I stayed in bed for thanksgiving and he went to our inlaws for a couple hours. He brought me back food so I made out.

My partner is a BIG believer in the zicam and airborn. He's been shoving that stuff down my through since Tuesday.

I'm a believer now. The zicam/zinc really does lessen the severity.

We had to drive home thanksgiving night but I was in no condition to drive 3 hours.

My partner was more diligent and recovered a little faster. We both worked Friday and he helped me with work Saturday.

I didn't take any zinc Friday as I thought you just took it at onset. The boyfriend set me straight and has been forcing zicam on me all weekend.

I was probably 80% by Saturday and 90% today.

For me, I think the zinc keeps the cold from moving deep in my chest. I've still got a bit of a cough but not too bad.

The zicam tabs aren't bad tasting. We have some airborne gummy bears but they taste a little gross. Better than chugging a whole glass. I think airborne is just vitamins.

Will taking zinc for colds make my colds go away faster?

Answers from Brent A. Bauer, M.D.
There's been a lot of talk about taking zinc for colds ever since a 1984 study showed that zinc supplements kept people from getting as sick. Since then, research has turned up mixed results about zinc and colds.

Recently an analysis of several studies showed that zinc lozenges or syrup reduced the length of a cold by one day, especially when taken within 24 hours of the first signs and symptoms of a cold.

Most colds are caused by a type of virus called rhinovirus, which thrives and multiplies in the nasal passages and throat (upper respiratory system). Zinc may work by preventing the rhinovirus from multiplying. It may also stop the rhinovirus from lodging in the mucous membranes of the throat and nose.

Zinc may be more effective when taken in lozenge or syrup form, which allows the substance to stay in the throat and come in contact with the rhinovirus.

Sudden onset chills, fever, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, honestly can’t function. That’s flu. If “just” sore throat etc it’s most likely a cold. The telltale sign of flu is the sudden onset.
You know the old saying about a cold...treat a cold and it lasts a week. Don’t treat a cold and it lasts 7 days. Feel better soon!

...are not typical features of strep. Headache, nausea and vomiting are.

A sore throat, sometimes REALLY sore, is often the first sign of a cold, even before your nose gets involved.

I think Zicam does make a difference sometimes. The hard part is remembering to take it every 3 hours. There are some studies that suggest that the nasal zinc can cause permanent damage to the sense of smell, so stick to the oral ones. Zicam tastes a lot better than Cold-Eeze.

And no, you don't swallow it, and I've never had any bad effects from it -- only that my sore throat went away VERY quickly. While I'm at it, if no one is around, I soak the tips of two swabs in peroxide and then put them in my ears for about 10 minutes (zswzswzzsswsllwzs sounds).

The undertaker had a good line on the episode of Godless that I just watched: "Good thing his mouth is sewed shut. He's got two kinds of teeth: Rotten and Gone."

Basically describes my whole bottom row. (Top row's long gone, replaced by dentures.)

Now that in the ear stuff, I'm with you there. I had my ears cleaned out with that stuff a few years back. Third best feeling in the world.
