Wonders of the Universe pronounces it me-thane. He's the only person I've heard say it that way. I like it too, but I don't get particularly excited over it.

Try saying "some methane" and "some ethane" and you'll see why.

Extends to related chemical names -- "sodium methoxide" vs "sodium ethoxide" is unambiguous w/British pronunciation.
