Scott Gimple out as ninth season writer of Walking Dead

He's still very much connected to the franchise, but they took the writing pen away from him.

I don't know if this has anything to do with Killing Karl, but, he's still explaining that decision.

Beginning with the show’s mid-season premiere on AMC on February 25th, Gimple will begin his final stretch as showrunner before handing off the title to Angela Kang with the series’ ninth season.

Gimple took some time to speak with Entertainment Weekly on the impact Carl’s (Chandler Riggs) death will have on the final days of “All Out War” — a decision that Gimple has received both praise and criticism for:

While Gimple wouldn’t give too much away about the mid-season premiere, he does say that what happens will set a specific tone for the season moving forward:

“Well, I can’t say exactly what happens, but there is a story there and there are remarkable performances by everybody involved, led by Chandler Riggs. And a certain compulsion is given to the story, certain ideas and wishes and even reveals with incredible importance to this season in the overall story.”

Riggs had bought a house where they film and had decided to go to college there. It looks like to me Autumn Jan 2018 #5

to watch the season premiere in October. She and a friend are going. Tour of the shooting location. Watch the new episode with either some of the cast or at least as the audience for The Talking Dead.

I don't know that Gimple had a lot of choice, though I guess he could have "disappeared" him for the indefinite future.

There's too much terminal shake up in the group and then new characters are introduced and you have to work your way through plotlines where the same lessons must be learned--again.

How many times do we have to see that sparing the rod only results in death for somebody else? Or, sparing the rod means saving someone who saves someone else?

I am guessing from reading the article that Chandler's departure is an opportunity to break that cycle and look for an end game: A truly self-sustained community that can defend itself without loss to life.
