If you're in a big city or right or left coast...then yeah. What's the alternative? New fridge? House call in the mid-west is about 70.00 to start.

unplugging it for a few minutes sometimes works like a computer. What's it doing?

Mine did that. The guy came and took the cardboard off the back. It was clogged w dust. He swept it out. Worked great. My refridge acts stupid in the winter as well and it's surprising bc...it's the winter.

That is what 99% of people never do.
I always vacuum at least every six months. My fridge is 30 years old and has only needed one repair.

Are the coils on the back of the fridge clean?
Is the drip pan under the fridge clean?
When you say working hard, exactly what do you mean?
How old is the unit?

Often a fridge labors when enough air isn't getting to the heat exchanger. That's where the fan is. If there's crud back there, clean it out.

Is the air supply/exhaust clear? I have 3 cats and they can screw up anything with an air intake/exhaust. It sounds like he's thinking it's a freon leak and he's going to charge it. That begs the question, why is it leaking.

Use a dollar bill. Close it in the door at many places around the seal. It should be held very snugly all around. If not, then a seal is pretty inexpensive and you can often change it yourself.
