I am watching it on Amazon Prime (I have to pay $2.99 per episode) but it's definitely worth it. I liked the book a lot better, it takes you through a historical tour of turn-of-the-century New York City, but the mini-series is still worth watching.

(63,221 posts)I liked the book better because it was so much more descriptive, but the film is still pretty good. I really like Daniel Bruhl as the lead actor. He has always been one of my favorites.

But on your say-so, I will give it another try. I liked the book.

(63,221 posts)I think it was done to create an atmosphere, but it is kind of hard to see detail in parts. Can you adjust your screen brightness?

(66,462 posts)But the character of Teddy Roosevelt is written so ineffectually. They got the look right. The character very closely resembles Roosevelt at that stage in his career. But in every scene he's behaving like a bumbling, harried, incompetent boob. When will the real TR pop out and start kicking some ass?

(63,221 posts)They have some interesting extra videos on the making of the film. Today's NYC would be unrecognizable as a set.

Especially when considering the reverential idolatry regarding the "Founding Fathers."
The "real" history of the United States helps explain where we are today and how it shouldn't be unexpected given our nature.

(63,221 posts)It really is so fascinating in so many ways - not just the murder mystery, but the history, the birth of forensics and psychology in solving crimes, the weaving in of real life historic figures and their influence. It is definitely worth a watch.
