NEW RULE: Please Put Song Title/Artist Name i.e. actual answers in your message BODY, not the Subject LineThis gives new visitors a shot at guessing on one's that are already answered w/o seeing the answer in the thread list - THANK YOU!!!
Let's try to not either be TOO obvious (no "Here I Am On The Road Again, Here I Am Up on Stage" ) ... and at the same time, not too obscure (no "this song was only ever released as the B-Side of the UK import of the 12" Club Mix Version" type of stuff) ... try to come up with something semi-recognizable ... but that still makes your fellow DU'ers have to comb their memory banks a bit ...
To that end, I'm setting a 2 line max for your hints, and obviously don't put the song title in your hint
And lets try to stick to artists/bands that at least 1/3 the population have likely heard of, and songs that are considered at least 'hits', if not 'iconic' for said artists ... and lyrics which are intelligible when listening to the song ... but not TOO obvious. An example of something I'd say would violate this rule would be "We'll kill the fatted calf tonight so stick around" ... everyone on earth knows that song, but there's only maybe about 2% of people who know 'that's what he says there', and it's obvious that it's almost impossible to just listen to and know ... that's what he says.
So lets avoid that sort of thing.
In case you're wondering, that's from Bennie and The Jets.
I'll start ... knowing this'll be real easy for at least a few folks ...
That's why if you please
I am on my bended knees

By the time that album came out, he'd been booted from the band, and was only listed under "additional musicians." By the time their second album came out, he was dead by his own hand. One of the most tragic stories in rock music.

Richard Cory
BY EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.
And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.
And he was richyes, richer than a king
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.
So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

I.E. TJT tour, April 1987 ...
I wasn't chasing them during my college spring break from San Diego to LA to Oakland or anything, about a month after the album's release ... nor did I wait around for 2+ hours after the show at the LA Sports Arena for the band to come out, nor did I get a high-five from Bono (who's hair looked exactly like mine) standing out the roof of his limo as they drove slowly through the awaiting crowd ...
I also didn't again see them again a 4th time (my 5th overall) around Nov. 1987 on the outdoor leg of TJT tour, in which they invited Armand Vaillancourt (who was the designer of the fountain in the Embarcadero that Bono 'defaced' with "Stop The Traffic Rock and Roll" while video recording a free show for Rattle and Hum, enraging Mayor DiFi) onstage to 'deface' their stage with a giant paintbrush ...

The success of this song pretty much paved the way for the likes of Cliff and Marley in the US in it's aftermath, and fun trivia fact, Whitney's mom Cissy Houston is one of the backing vocalists on it.

(33,643 posts)Or you can just name the song if you want as well.
The only 'rules' are to not be TOO obscure in song choice, and to not 'give it away' in the subject line, that way people looking at the thread list can pick original posts to try w/o already knowing the answer because of the answer being part of a respondent's subject line ... But I only thought of this after the first 50 or so ... hence 'replies with song titles' appear at the start of the thread.
Great job to everyone adhering to this 'after the fact', makes it more fun for newcomers I think.

Calling all Angels is a great tune I don't care what anyone says ... their first three records (Train, Drops of Jupiter, and the one with angels, i forget the title) ... are all damn great ... and even though much later hit 'Save Me San Francisco is kinda cheesy, I still dig it ... being a Bay Area native stuck in AZ, sometimes I just need to crank that song to keep my sanity ... or better yet, crank up and watch this video ... gotta love the denouement at the wedding ... perfect. I know where pretty much every spot in this video is, so that's fun. Watching it is like a mini-vacation ...
I really wish though they'd kept the style of their first two albums in their later years instead of getting so poppy. I mean Drops of Jupiter is pretty 'pop' (still a great song) but rest of the album is not so much that way. Then again ... they've been a band since since 1993, and are still cranking out massive hits ... you don't see that too often anymore.
Like this song from their debut (1998) is the SHIZZ ...

I used to sing it in my (mostly covers) band in 1994 ... it's three chords, and the truth.
consider_this
(2,847 posts)mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)It literally is 3 chords (or maybe it's 4, I forget) repeated in an unchanging cadence the entire time ... great for warming up the playing and the singing for the rest of the gig.
It also just so happens that Low is ALMOST IDENTICAL to another great song (that came out just before it actually) that we also used to play in that particular band i'z in ... though this one does have one minor chord change in the bridge part ... definitely don't want to play these two in your gig too close to one another lol ...
This performance, btw, is totally badass ... if you like 'Low', you have to like this one ... they're so much alike it's ridiculous. However, other than the lyrics, perhaps ... it's actually better, IMHO

(33,643 posts)Not good, not bad ... just some people are randomly really good at it, and some people just are NOT ... but are probably much better at other uses of the mind.
And then of course there's the knowing in the first place, then being able to recall ... the name of the song and the artist, on top of placing the lyrics with a particular song to begin with. Though they're both similar 'talents', they're not exactly the same.
I say that because, I've actually known many people in life that know lots of words to lots of songs ... they can sing along when they come on ... but they actually have NO IDEA the name of the song or band. They just don't care about that part.
Myself, if I like a song ... I HAVE to know who does it and the name of the song. It's like an automatic impulse. I hear something on the radio I like and they don't say who it is, I'll try remember some of the lyrics til I get to a computer, and then try to look up the song. And then I probably won't forget who does the song for the rest of my life.
And of course I didn't mean 'don't look it up!' ... I just meant 'don't answer on the thread unless you really knew the answer'

To me, the absolute bone-stock, "as it was recorded/mixed in 1980" studio version is such perfection, I've never heard any other rendition or remaster than sounded better to me, probably cause I'm so attached to 'how it sounds in my head' after like 500 listens ... that any deviation automatically becomes 'less good'
The song is sheer friggin' perfection exactly as it appeared on the album, that's the reality of the situation ... the drum work in particular is just SO FRIGGIN GOOD it's ridiculous.

mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Boxful of Letters is just another song on Wilco's debut A.M. And yeah, that little 'trilogy' of SBS, Wilco (the Album) and Real Love is absolutely awesome. Not as unique as say Yankee Hotel Foxtrot which is also brilliant but a bit more ... abstract ... but all three are just chock-full of amazing tunes. If you've never heard their 2nd album (double disc set) called 'Being There' I also highly recommend that one. TONS of great songs on it.
Anodyne by Uncle Tupelo is the last album of that band before Jay Farrar left, and most of the band stayed with Jeff Tweedy to form Wilco. I'm a HUGE Tupelo fan, they were brilliant band, WAY more rocking overall than Wilco though Anodyne is a bit subdued compared to their earlier albums No Depression and Still Feel Gone, all 3 of which if you've never heard ... you definitely must. They're like a Countrified Nirvana, and from the exact same era (early 1990's). They're as seminal an 'alt country' band as you can imagine, afaic. I think ultimately ... too much talent in one band led to their demise. Jay and Jeff were both 'frontmen', no getting around it.
Here's a favorite from Still Feel Gone ... this is Jay Farrar (his post-Tupelo band is called Son Volt, they're also pretty good, esp. their debut Trace which is AMAZING,, and third album Wide Swing Tremolo) singing ... he's like 24 at the time of doing this song, but he sounds like a world-weary traveler ... how do you not love a lyric like "What has life, and 50 years in this town done for you? 'Cept to earn your name and place on a barstool?"
And a Tweedy classic from his Tupelo days ...
And a bonus track ... a Jay song from No Depression ... imagine doing this on your debut album ... as freaking kids, practically. I mean this song is SO FREAKING GOOD ... "Whiskey Bottle ... over Jesus ... not forever ... but just for now" ...

Also of note on that album is a nice cover version of "I Can't Get Next To You." The whole album's a classic, actually.
Savoy Brown's lead vocalist on the album, Dave Walker is ALSO noteworthy for one of the quickest ins & outs in Fleetwood Mac's history. He sang two lead vocals on their "Penguin" album and was not deemed a good fit for the band, so out he went.

First song learned, eh.....impressive!
Not iconic per se....just into really great guitar playing! Any genre, except country.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)They're played almost dead-on the exact same way ... well, other than one small chord change (mind you, it's just a small reorder of the three chords the songs consist of) in the chorus part of Here Comes A Regular which Knocking doesn't do (the section where he sings 'and everybody wants ...' and the next few lines are a change to the chord order that the entirety of the rest of both songs rely on)
Also, to get semi-technical, Paul's guitar is tuned down a half-step whereas Heaven's Door is played with standard tuning

Our tour guide turned to me and goes "Sir, do you know the significance of where you're standing right now?" And I was thinking to myself "well, duh"...and she proceeds to say "Look behind you at the picture on the wall...you're standing in the exact spot where David Ruffin was standing when he performed the vocals on "Ain't to Proud to Beg". Damn if I didn't have chill bumps looking up at that pic and seeing the mic hanging from the ceiling. I could just imaging Ruffin struggling to hit those first few notes which were just outside his range but the more he sang the more hoarse his voice became and it ultimately created a magical sound!
Smokey played an incredibly underrated role for much of the early Motown Sound!

The King of Prussia
(751 posts)It was a big radio hit here. One of the best pop/rock songs of the mid-70s and this artist's defining moment. And the lyric seems entirely appropriate to today's circumstances:
"Come up and see the world, it's like a ship going down
It's running aground, it's all over."

(18,759 posts)I love Rocky Horror. Lots of fun but no cigar.
This song was from a British group in 1969. This song features a female lead vocalist. The band is basically folk rock and formed in 1967. The song is the group's version of a Scottish ballad which I believe originated in the 12th century.
Here's a bit more:
Either their mantles of green or else their maidenhead
Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to Carterhaugh as fast as go can she
If you're completely stumped, I'll PM you a link to the song's youtube.

(23,046 posts)Before MTV ran videos, Showtime had a program called "Rock Of The 80s," It was extremely cool...they had a revolving stage, so that when the first band finished, the stage rotated and there was the next band. The highlights I remember were Flock Of Seagulls, Jason & The Scorchers, and THIS band, those jangly boys from Athens GA. This was the first time I heard the song, and loved it immediately. Years later, the lyrics were available online. Up until then, I was guessing, with a word or two here or there that actually sounded like a word.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)If you'd posted 'em in 1984, 2 seconds after I'd listened to the song, I wouldn't have recognized them lol ...
I think I was pretty sure he said "sit and try for the big heat, no wastin time, (song title)" (which is about 1/2 right) and "that just isn't nothing at all" and "we could gather, throw a fit" and "get away from me" and "I can hear you, can you hear me" ... that was about all I was (pretty sure) of. I certainly didn't know wth he was saying in teh line you posted, and tbh I'm still not fully convinced the lyrics that are 'online' are 'right', they're not official/on an REM site or anything.
In case anyone's interested in what we're referring to ... I'll give it away with the track ... take a listen it's pretty damn hilarious how hard it is to make out what Stipe is singing ... not to mention, it's a stupid catchy, genius song and kinda encapsulates their early awesomeness (from their first LP, this one), IMHO ...
Come to think of it the song that proceeds it "Catapult" is nearly it's equal in the 'cryptic' department.
First time I heard Murmur I took in Side One & wasn't quite sure how much I liked it ... was still a bit of a headbanger at the time ... then flipped it to Side 2 and then Catapult/Sitting Still came on and I'z like "okay, I DO like these guys" ...
