A good man.

My community has slightly fewer than 2500 people. Being small, we all seem to know each other. And some people, especially the old timers and the very social people like Jake, are known by all.

Jake died today. He was 91 years old. Until the end, he drove around town, made the rounds to the restaurants, worked in the food pantry (he was a founding member), and smoked. I don't recommend the smoking, although he got away with it.

Jake was one of the last genuine World War II heroes. He was on the honor guard on the battleship Missouri for the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. He had a purple heart, bronze, gold and silver stars.

RIP, Jake.
