I think it is time for me to come clean about my "weird" crush. I am lusting in my heart (although I am not sure that is exactly where the feeling is located) after James May. I have no idea why exactly except that I find him incredibly sexy, even though, like most (all?) of us he is older and grayer than when I first started watching those shows. He is very smart and kind of weird. I have always been drawn to people who are like that. All of my relationships have been with people who are different in one way or another, including the one I am in now. I am also strangely jealous of his SO. It should be me, damnit. Yes it is disturbing.
Anyway, make fun of me if you like but I would never say no to him if for some reason we were somehow to meet. I am not proud of that but there it is. I am slightly obsessed; it bothers me somewhat when I most certainly do have an actual life, not just a fantasy life in my head. I joined Twitter just so I could follow him and Clarkson because their exchanges are hilarious. Now I am obsessed with Twitter but for other reasons. I want people to follow me, though I have nothing particular funny or interesting to say.
My boyfriend and I joke about his "pretend wives". Yes, MULTIPLE pretend wives/girlfriends. So I can have at least one pretend boyfriend I think. Well I wouldn't say no to George Clooney either, come to think of it.
So does anybody else have any weird crushes? And by weird, I mean slightly out of the mainstream. Not like George Clooney or Brad Pitt, who are pretty obvious, conventional choices (not that there is anything wrong with that!) but like, say, Steve Buscemi. I can't think of a female equivalent right now.

(21,020 posts)I've had a crush on Kirstie Alley for years (yes, I'm a female)
Have a weird crush now on Barry Weiss from the show "Storage Wars".
Then there's the character, "Hawk" (played by Pato Hoffmann) in a movie called "Cheyenne Warrior".
My weird crush career got an early start when I developed a mad crush, at the age of 5 or so, on the original Mighty Mouse.

(20,176 posts)He's got to be wealthy from some other source though because all he does on Storage Wars is lose money week after week. Spend $500 on a locker and get $230 out of it.
OTOH, I hate Dave Hester. Cocky, annoying and an asshole to everybody else.

(5,909 posts)Sorry, had to go there. I hate him too.

Then they did a show where they're all just sitting around talking and he wasn't the big jerk he portrays on the show and I decided he's sort of OK.
Dave Hester...I sort of liked him but yeah, he's cocky.
I found out something about Barry the other day that makes me like him even more...any of the storage rooms he gets, if there are any furs in them, he does not sell them. No profit from the sale of animal fur. He just donates them to someone.

(8,492 posts)I had crushes on older men:
Robert Shaw
Brian Keith
Omar Shariff
The pimp from Baretta
Peter Falk
and just about any guy with gray hair and blue eyes.
After 16, just the opposite. Long dark hair, dark eyes.

(15,758 posts)Because I'm right there with you. I've been crazy about the guy for years. Sure, he might not look like a type we're "supposed to" lust after (but for the life of me I do NOT get the attraction of Ryan Gosling, so maybe I'm just weird), but then again, what's not to love?
He's congenial, polite, modest, funny, sincere, self-deprecating, and effing brilliant. Plus he often expresses pure joy in his work, loves to play, and enjoys a good laugh (and a good beer or cup of tea). On top of THAT he's an amazing writer and thinker (always a talent that gets me to sit up and take notice)...and my sig is a great example of that. On the other hand, sometimes he can be a bit petulant...which I also find endearing!
Anyway, I'm willing to overlook the beer belly, bad clothes (oh how I love his bad clothes!), and flyaway hair when he's got all that going for him.
I love his tweets, too--they never fail to crack me up. Clarkson's too. And when they tweet to each other, well, it's a Very Good Day.

(16,245 posts)I've discovered Twitter and now I get absolutely nothing done.
There is so much humor. LOLGOP, Indecision (which is I think by comedy central). Alec Baldwin. God. (I swear someone is posing as God and it is hilarious, if you are the irreverent type like me).
And it's cool because you can actually get a reply sometimes from people you admire.

(16,245 posts)I ditched the cable because my new place was more expensive. Is it wrong that I am considering getting cable tv again just to watch Top Gear?
Hulu plus has Man Lab the first series and the first series of Toy Stories. I watched most of James and Oz Clarke's wine show on YouTube. I found a wine that they mentioned on the California part of that show that I really like, the only one on that whole show that I had even heard of. And it is usually less than 10 bucks. I agree with James, where he was looking for stuff most people could buy in their grocery store that didn't break the bank. I like Oz, he cracks me up, but I can't stand that sort of wine snobbery, all that sort of fussiness about it. Just find something you like and drink it, for Pete's sake.
MorningGlow
(15,758 posts)I like Oz, too, but yeah, all that rolling the wine around to detect the "notes" and stuff is a bit much. I loved it when James said, "When do you get to drink it?"
I understand your James obsession--I'm the same way. When I saw a bottle of Ravenswood Zinfandel in front of him in one part of the California trip, I practically burst, I was so excited because that's one I drink. A connection! A connection! We'll drink it together one day, I know it!
alarimer
(16,245 posts)It is good. Some of their other stuff is good too.
I can't see the point of a $50 bottle of wine. It can't be that much better than a $10 one and, science says, most people can't actually tell the difference.
I felt the same way about that connection thing too.
I did, however, get mad when Top Gear totally dissed my car! I liked that car so much, I bought a newer model of the same thing! Because, you know, I can't afford a Ferrari. And I can't stand the sort of anti-environmentalism that they all frequently express.

My love for Amanda Palmer is perhaps a bit less weird, but my fiance contends she is ugly and sings like she's deaf. I still think she's awesome and Neil Gaiman is a bastard for having stolen her away.

(9,230 posts)I grew weary of hearing how powerful gorilla grips are. They can exert over 500 pounds pressure in their grips. So I got a crusher to prepare for my thumb wrestling contest with a gorilla who better not bite me if I win! No human has gotten there. I cannot stand this. Soon I hope to be over 100 pounds. In your face (hopefully not near me as I type) Magilla!
